Cardinals welcome Kelly to Larry Ward

BRIDGE CITY — After playing Class 2A state-ranked No. 1 Newton and a very physical Vidor team the Bridge City Cardinals look to take down the Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs Friday night at Larry Ward Stadium.

The Cardinals (0-2) are coming off a 54-13 loss on the road against Vidor and they fell to Newton 44-20 in their season opener.

Kelly, meanwhile, had a bye week last week. The Bulldogs (0-1) fell to Class 1A West Sabine 27-2 in their opener back on Aug. 30.

Cardinal quarterback Chase Shugart has completed 19-of-44 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions and remains questionable for Friday night’s game due to a shoulder injury he suffered against the Pirates. Backup quarterback Derrick Dearing did throw a eight-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Busby in the fourth quarter.

Busby has been solid at receiver for the Redbirds. He has five catches for 126.

After giving up over 400 yards a game to both Newton and Vidor, the Cardinals, led by the likes of defensive line standouts Josh Henry and Jordan Schamber, will look to slow down a Kelly attack that has struggled.

The Bulldogs could not find the end zone against a tough West Sabine squad.

Kelly is still seeking its first win since the 2011 season after going 0-10 last year.

Coach Todd Holmes returns eight starters on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Connor Moore will lead the Bulldogs at quarterback. John Thomas is an excellent athlete who can run and has nice hands.

The Bulldogs have nice size in the trenches in the forms of Brent Booker (6-4, 320) and Armando Ledet (6-4, 255.)

Bridge City thumped the Bulldogs 35-0 in Beaumont last year. Tailback Ashton Hunter rushed for 295 yards and a touchdown and the Bridge City defense limited Kelly to just 53 yards of total offense.

The Cardinals will get some rest with their bye week Sept. 20 before opening up District 21-3A play Sept. 27 at home against the Buna Cougars. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs will return home next week to welcome in the Orangefield Bobcats.
