Cards welcome WO-S to Ward

BRIDGE CITY — While the West Orange-Stark Mustangs seem to be heading on a collision course with Silsbee as far as the District 21-3A title is concerned, the Bridge City Cardinals look to stay in the heat of a wild playoff chase for the third and fourth-place spots when the two teams battle it out at Larry Ward Stadium Friday night.

The Mustangs (6-1, 4-0) are dead-even with Silsbee (6-1, 4-0) with two games remaining. Silsbee hosts Hardin-Jefferson (5-3, 2-2) Friday.

WO-S will welcome Silsbee to Hooks Stadium Nov. 8.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals (2-6, 1-3) look to bounce back from a 54-27 loss at H-J last week and find themselves in the mix with H-J, Buna (5-4, 2-3), Orangefield (4-4, 1-3) and Hamshire-Fannett (3-5, 1-3) for the final two berths.

Bridge City visit rival Orangefield in the Bayou Bowl next week.

The Mustangs are coming off a 42-0 win over Buna last week as they piled up 417 yards and limited the Cougars to just 128, earning their 90th shutout in school history in the process.

WO-S has had one of its most productive seasons on offense in years as they’re averaging 372.4 yards a game.

Quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole has completed 60-of-96 passes for 1,042 yards and has 11 touchdown passes and just one interception.

The Mustangs spread the wealth around at receiver as Will Johnson (17-271-5), Deionte Thompson (16-346-3), Dwain Boullard (13-164-3) and Chris Horn (11-173-0) have all been very productive.

Chris James continues to lead the WO-S ground game with 455 yards and five TDs on 64 carries. Sterling-Cole has 277 yards and eight TDs on 57 carries followed by John Scott (40-261-2) and Chase Rutledge (53-248-4).

The Mustangs will face a Cardinal defense that is allowing 409 yards a game.

The Cardinals have put up nice offensive numbers the last three weeks and are now averaging 269.8 yards a game.

Quarterback Chase Shugart passed for 256 yards and a touchdown in the loss against H-J last week. He has completed 72-of-165 passes for 1,070 yards and seven TDs and has 12 interceptions.

He has three strong receivers to go to in Malcolm Busby (21-371-3), Blaine Slaughter (15-189-1) and Keaton Langston (11-239-4).

Jonah Lemoine paces the ground attack with 423 yards and five TDs on 101 carries while Shugart has darted for 312 yards and a TD on 66 totes.

They will go up against a Mustang defense that is allowing 255.1 yards a game.

The Mustangs downed the Cardinals 46-0 last season. WO-S picked up 409 total yards and limited Bridge City to just 43.
