Cardinals, Hawks face vital 21-3A tilt

SOUR LAKE — Getting just what the doctor ordered last week, the Bridge City Cardinals find themselves right back in the playoff chase in District 21-3A.

After fending off Hamshire-Fannett 20-17 for Homecoming last week, the Cardinals (2-5, 1-2) turn their focus towards the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks in Sour Lake (4-3, 1-2), who they are currently tied for fourth-place in the 21-3A standings.

The Hawks dropped a tough 14-0 decision to third-place Buna (5-3, 2-2) last week.

The Cardinals put together a total team effort to turn back the Longhorns last week.

Bridge City outgained H-F 308-237 as the Cardinals had their best defensive effort of the season, including limiting outstanding Longhorn quarterback Kendrick King to just 84 yards on 23 carries.

Running back Jonah Lemoine and quarterback Chase Shugart combined for 185 yards on 35 carries in the victory and Shugart passed for 103 yards and a touchdown while running for another. Blaine Slaughter, who now has 10 catches for 118 yards, had three catches for 48 yards and a TD.

Shugart has completed 58-of-137 passes for 811 yards and six TDs to go along with 12 interceptions.

Lemoine paces the BC ground arsenal with 384 yards and five TDs on 91 carries while Shugart has darted for 253 yards on 54 totes. Michael Busby leads all Cardinal receivers with 17 catches for 273 yards and three TDs. Bridge City ids averaging 235.9 yards a game and will face 21-3A’s top defense in the Hawks, who are giving up just 226.4.

The Hawks struggled in getting their Slot-T offense moving against Buna last week. The game was tied at 0-0 at the half until the Cougars tacked on a pair of scores after intermission.

H-J ranks last in total offense in 21-3A, gaining just 235.9 yards a game and will face a Cardinal defense that is allowing a district-high 403.1 yards per outing.

The Hawks don’t have one dominant back but they have a nice stable that includes Logan Thompson (55-364-5), Jared Gieske (42-327-3), Hunter Cooley (47-292-2) and Tanner Jones (66-245-1).

The Cardinals defeated H-J 13-0 in a defensive struggle last season. BC held the Hawks to just 173 total yards.

Bridge City will play host to Orange County rival West Orange-Stark next week while the Hawks pay Silsbee a visit.
