PORT NECHES — With three games remaining in the District 20-4A football schedule, a lot is on the line for the Vidor Pirates and Port Neches-Groves Indians at The Reservation Friday night.

Both teams are smarting from narrow losses last week.

The Pirates (3-4, 1-3) fell just short to Beaumont Central (4-3, 3-1) 36-34 while the Indians (4-3, 2-2) dropped a tough 21-17 decision to first-place Nederland (6-1, 4-0) 21-17 in Mid-County Madness.

Though they wouldn’t be mathematically eliminated from the playoff picture with a loss Friday, the Pirates could definitely use a win to stay in the thick of things.

The Pirates piled up 423 yards against Central, including 417 on the ground but still feel just short to the Jaguars.

Pirate tailback Sage Smith had 147 yards on 30 carries in the loss to the Jaguars. He now has 1,168 yards and 16 touchdowns on 132 carries.

Running back Jeremy Stevenson has had a couple big games two weeks in a row, including last week’s 176 yards on 18 carries. He now has 312 yards and six TDs on 34 carries. Freshman tailback Haylen Leckelt has 301 yards on 46 totes.

The Pirate defense allowed Central 363 yards last week, including 316 on the ground.

The Indians will look to bounce back after a tough loss to their archrivals.

The Indians have a dangerous offense, led by quarterback Ky Walker. Walker, who threw for 284 yards in the loss to Nederland, has completed 99-of-175 passes for 1,280 yards to go along with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

His favorite targets are receivers Jeremiah Rose (48-571-6 and Kaleb Sparks (44-596-14). Sparks had seven catches for 138 yards and two scores against Nederland. PN-G outgained the Bulldogs 298-245 despite the loss.

The Pirates buried the Indians 49-13 last season as Vidor piled up 578 yards, all on the ground, while limiting PN-G to just 249 yards.

Vidor will visit Livingston next week while the Indians head to Beaumont to face Ozen.
