Bears greet Ozen in vital 20-4A tilt

LITTLE CYPRESS — After two hard battles in Mid-County, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears will look to keep themselves in the hunt in a tough District 20-4A race when they play host to the Beaumont Ozen Panthers for Homecoming at Battlin’ Bear Stadium Friday night.

The Bears (2-3, 2-1) are coming off a tough 27-14 road loss at 20-4A favorite Nederland while the Panthers (2-4, 2-1) gathered up some steam by defeating Livingston 40-28 last Saturday.

LC-M took advantage of three turnovers in the first half to lead Nederland 14-7 at the half last week but the Bulldogs escaped by going on a 20-0 tear in the second half.

The Bears will look to get their offense back on track after totaling just 154 yards in Nederland.

Tailback Jalen Griffin paces the offense with 371 yards and two TDs on 72 carries.

Brandon Toliver has 228 yards on 35 carries while Robert Green has 170 yards on 40 totes.

Bear quarterback Caleb Harley has completed 38-of-79 passes for 366 yards with four TDs and two interceptions.

Receiver Dalton Doyle has 16 catches for 257 yards and three scores.

After starting the season 0-4 stacked up against a brutal non-district schedule, the Panthers have responded by defeating Vidor and Livingston the last two weeks.

The Panthers have found a weapon in sophomore quarterback Joshua Boyd the last two weeks. In a 41-21 win against Vidor, Boyd rushed for 194 yards and passed for 210. He rushed for 131 yards and two TDs against Livingston and passed for 135 yards and two more TDs. He has 339 yards and five TDs on 48 carries and has completed 21-of-27 passes for 383 yards and five TDs in his two starts.

Javaris Curl (50-188-0) and Rodney Randle (33-188-1) also tote the ball. Kaylon Sellers has 16 catches for 175 yards and a TD and Ronnie Ceaser has 17 catches for 122 yards and two scores.

Ozen did allow Livingston 347 total yards as the Lions piled up 297 of it on the ground.

The Bears outlasted the Panthers 21-15 in Beaumont last year.

LC-M will travel to Lumberton next week while the Panthers play host to Nederland.
