Mustangs to entertain upstart Hawks

WEST ORANGE — Getting off to a nice start in defense of their District 21-3A crown against Hamshire-Fannett last week, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs will welcome the much-improved Hardin-Jefferson Hawks to Dan Hooks Stadium Friday night.

The Mustangs (3-1, 1-0) are coming off a 36-10 road victory at H-F while the Hawks (3-1, 0-0) had their bye week after a nice run through non-district.

WO-S had its offense working on all cylinders in the win over the Longhorns, totaling over 400 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole had his best game of the season, completing 9-of-15 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 70 yards on seven carries and two more TDs.

Tailbacks Chris James and John Scott combined for 186 yards on 19 carries.

The Mustangs are gobbling up 360.3 yards a game.

Sterling-Cole has completed 28-of-52 passes for 436 yards and four TDs with no picks. James has darted for 404 yards and three TDs on just 47 carries.

The Mustangs have spread the wealth around at receiver which includes the likes of Dwain Boullard (9-110-1), Chris Horn (8-128-0), and Will Johnson (8-110-1).

WO-S will face a H-J defense that is ranked second in 21-3A that has allowed a mere 186.3 yards a contest.

The Hawks, led by first-year head coach Dwayne DuBois, the former outstanding offensive coordinator at Vidor, notched non-district wins against Anahuac, Splendora and Tarkington before dropping their last game to East Chambers 10-7.

H-J runs a hard-nosed Slot-T offense as they love to keep it on the ground. They’re averaging 264 yards a game, 257.3 of it via the ground game.

The Hawks certainly do not have a certain back to key on.

Logan Thompson leads the way with 231 yards and four TDs on 40 carries. Jared Gieske has 192 yards and two TDs on 18 carries followed by Hunter Cooley (22-167-1) and Tanner Jones (33-151-1).

The Hawks will face a Mustang defense that has allowed 293.5 yards per outing.

The Mustangs blanked the Hawks 49-0 in Sour Lake last season, limiting H-J to 73 total yards while ringing up 279 of their own.

WO-S will have its bye week next week while the Hawks entertain Orangefield.
