Lady Stangs come up just short against H-F

WEST ORANGE — They battled Hamshire-Fannett hard but too many miscues in the field proved a little too costly for the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs as they fell to the Lady Longhorns 7-5 in District 21-3A play at Lady Mustang Field Tuesday.

The Lady Longhorns (2-0 in 21-3A play) took advantage of four  WO-S (0-4 in 21-3A play) errors in the field that helped spark victory, including three in a four-run frame in the top of the third.

The Lady Mustangs actually matched the Lady Longhorns at the plate as both teams finished with eight hits apiece.

Freshman pitcher Madison Neal pitched well for the Lady Mustangs in going the distance. She scattered the eight hits and had seven strikeouts to go along with six walks.

Wendee Piggott earned the win on the hill for H-F. She went the distance, allowing eight hits while striking out four and walking just one.

The Lady Mustangs tagged Piggott for four hits and three runs in the bottom of the second to snare the early lead.

Neal led off with a hard single to left. With one out, Ashle Taylor reached on a error at short and Aleah Ducharme was hit by a pitch to load up the bases.

Marlaysia Davis slapped a RBI single to left to plate Neal.

Tianna Mims brought home Taylor with a slap single to left. With two outs, Ryisha Daughtery, who was 2-for-3, made it 3-0 with an infield single that scored Ducharme.

The Lady Longhorns grabbed the advantage with their four-run third.

Jacie LeBlanc drew a one-out walk and Shelby Broussard roped a single to left.

Ashlea Speight connected on a hard fly that was dropped in centerfield, allowing both LeBlanc and Broussard to score.

Courtney Forse tied things up with a infield single that brought home Speight. With two outs, Forse was able to dart home on an errant pickoff attempt at third base to give H-F the 4-3 edge.

The Lady Longhorns tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth.

Broussard drew a leadoff walk followed by a Speight single to left. With one out, Kaytlin Richard belted a two-run double up the middle. Richard eventually made it 7-3 when she darted home off a Ashlyn Laurents RBI groundout.

WO-S battled for a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Destinie Stewart led things off with a infield single and Ashle Taylor drew a walk. Stewart scored with one out when a fly ball hit by Marlaysia Davis was dropped by the shortstop.

The Lady Mustangs added their fifth run in the seventh when Daughtery ripped a one-out triple and scored on a Neal RBI groundout.

Kim Wendling finished 2-for-3 with a double for H-F.

The Lady Longhorns will host Orangefield in 21-3A play Thursday. The Lady Mustangs return to action Mar. 22 when they visit Orangefield.
