Cards ready to fly in Fannett

FANNETT, Texas — The Bridge City Cardinals can help themselves in a big way if they can get a District 21-3A win on the road against the last-place Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns Friday night.

The Cardinals (2-4, 1-1) are coming off a 45-20 loss to first-place Silsbee while the Longhorns (2-5, 0-3) absorbed a 40-21 road loss at Buna.

The Cardinals are led offensively by tailback Ashton Hunter. Hunter has gobbled up 679 yards and four touchdowns on 111 carries.

Quarterback Daniel Faulk has completed 36-of-91 passes for 404 yards and six TDs. His favorite targets have been Adrian Schubarth (9-99-0), Colin Smith (8-77, 1) and Tanner Cervenka (6-127-3). Running back Kruz Dearbonne has 152 yards and two TDs on 38 carries.

The Longhorns have been outscored 138-49 in their three 21-3A losses and the Cardinal defense, sparked by linebacker Zach Cole, will look to slow Hamshire-Fannett down.

Quarterback Dante Smith has completed 59-of-114 pass attempts for 698 yards and four TDs and has eight interceptions.

Travis Appling has 20 catches for 420 yards and two TDs and Darius Riley has 26 grabs for 240 yards and two TDs.

Longhorn tailback Jordan Brown is a hard-nosed runner and has 429 yards and four TDs on 96 carries.

The Cardinals will return home next week to face Hardin-Jefferson while the Longhorns will visit Silsbee.
