BEAUMONT — Whoever wins Saturday night’s District 20-4A battle between the Vidor Pirates and the Beaumont Central Jaguars will certainly help their chances on closing in on a playoff berth.

Both the Pirates (5-1, 2-1) and Jaguars (2-4, 2-1) are tied for second-place with Livingston (2-4, 2-1) and all three are just one game back of first-place Nederland.

The Pirates crushed last-place Lumberton 66-6 last week while the Jaguars downed Port Neches-Groves in a 56-50 shootout.

The Pirates own 20-4A’s top offense at 419.2 yards a game, and the top defense (189.2).

Quarterback Montana Quirante powers the fierce Pirate ground attack with 782 yards and 13 touchdowns on 97 carries.

Vidor fullback Justin Moore has 599 yards and nine TDs on 68 totes while tailback Thomas Novak has darted for 368 yards and two TDs on 48 carries.

The Vidor defense, led by defensive lineman Johnboy Smith, will try to slow down a potent Jaguar attack featuring quarterback Robert Mitchell.

Mitchell leads 20-4A in passing, completing 91-of-152 passes for 1,147 yards with nine TDs and four interceptions. He has three nice targets in Garrison Mitchell (29-370-4), Landen Malbrough (21-349-3) and Nicalus Rhone (21-301-1).

Mitchell also leads the ground game with 405 yards and five TDs on 90 carries while back Kamon Darby has 240 yards on 43 totes.

The Pirates will host PN-G next week while Central visits Livingston.
