The Orange Leader
Without question, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats have had a wild adventure in the Class 3A Region III playoffs thus far.
The Lady Bobcats squeezed out a dramatic 6-5 bidistrict victory over Liberty when Kylie Bradley cranked out a grand slam with two outs in the seventh inning.
Last week, on the opposite end of the spectrum, the Lady Bobcats pounded District 23-3A champion Houston Furr 23-0 in three innings. And that’s even by “calling off the dogs.”
Now, Coach Amy McLauglin’s Lady Bobcats dive into the Region III quarterfinals Friday night at 7 p.m. at Baytown Lee High School when they face the Sweeny Lady Bulldogs.
Sweeny just ousted Orangefield’s rival Bridge City in three games, including a 11-6 Game Three win on Saturday.
“Here’s where everything gets tougher,” said McLaughlin. “Sweeny has a very good team that has a excellent tradition. It’s all going to come down to who is swinging the bats and who makes the least errors.”
One thing for sure, the Lady Bobcat bats have heated up of late.
Bradley, along with Haleigh Turley and Katelyn Dickerson have been posting big numbers with home runs and doubles while Kelsey Ancelot, Kaylie Evans, Ashton Gatreaux, Haley Fontenot and Khandi Breaux have been slapping the ball around as well.
Breaux continues to be a “gem” on the hill in getting the two playoff wins.
“Sweeny has a good hitting ballclub, that’s for sure,” said McLaughlin. “They have a freshman pitcher that is tough along with a senior one. We feel like we can hit the ball against them. It’s all going to come down to who is hot that night, that’s why I wanted a one-gamer.”
The Orangefield-Sweeny winner will face either Waco Robinson or Lufkin Hudson in the Region III semifinals next week.
