Softball teams find tourney success

ORANGE — Several Orange County softball and baseball teams had nice runs in tournament play over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears picked up a pair of solid wins at the Waco Midway Tournament.

The Lady Bears downed host Waco Midway 5-1 in their first game Saturday.

Raven Cole went the distance on the hill for the Lady Bears, scattering six hits while striking out eight and walking one.

The Lady Bears pounded out 11 hits.

Morgan Babineaux was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in. Chelsea McLain was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Kassie James was 2-for-4 with a RBI and scored. Taylor Fraccastoro went 2-for-4 and scored. Hope Russell was 2-for-3 and scored.

LC-M thumped Frenship 11-2.

Russell earned the win on the mound, going five innings. She allowed four hits while striking out three.

LC-M picked up 11 more hits in the win.

James went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored. McLain was 2-for-2 with a RBI and two runs scored. Mikaela Steagall was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Kayleigh Roy had a hit, scored twice and plated a run. Fraccastoro and Babineaux each had a hit, both had two RBI and scored. Babineaux and Cole each had hits and brought in a run apiece.

On Friday, the Lady Bears dropped a tough 2-0 decison to Temple. Temple scored a run in both the first and second innings and limited LC-M to just one hit by Fraccastoro.

Temple’s Lexi Smith allowed just the one hit and struck out nine with four walks. Cole pitched well for LC-M, allowing just three hits while striking out nine and walking two.

The Lady Bears also defeated Arlington Bowie 9-0 in the tourney.

The Lady Bears will open up District 20-4A play tonight on the road at Livingston and will compete in the College Station Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

The Orangefield Lady Bobcats went through the Kountze Tournament unscathed and didn’t even allow a run.

The Lady Bobcats blanked Deweyville 7-0; defeated Onalaska 6-0; toppled Beaumont Kelly 4-0 and defeated District 21-3A rival Hamshire-Fannett 13-0.

The Lady Bobcats will head to the Livingston Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

The Bridge City Lady Cardinals fared well up at the Jasper Tournament.

Bridge City defeated Lumberton 2-1; toppled Newton 7-0; downed West Hardin 11-0 and fell to host Jasper 3-1. Bridge City will compete in the Fort Bend Christian Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

In baseball action, LC-M competed in the Humble Tournament.

The Bears defeated Goose Creek Memorial 2-1 in a nine-inning thriller and also defeated Pasadena Dobie 6-5. The Bears fell to Concordia Lutheran 10-0 and dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Kingwood Park. The Bears will host their Gibbens Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

West Orange-Stark participated in the Kountze Tournament. The Mustangs defeated Colmesneil 10-3 on Saturday. They fell to Kountze 1-0 and lost to Liberty 4-3. Aidan Anderson had 14 strikeouts in six innings in the loss to Kountze.

WO-S will team up with Orangefield to host a tournament Thursday through Saturday.

Orangefield played in the Lumberton Tournament and went 1-2 in three games.

Orangefield first lost to Hamshire-Fannett, 12-0, with Eric Truncale and Cody Angelle coming up with the only hits of the game for the Bobcats. Blake Permenter took the loss on the mound.

The Bobcats then defeated the Deweyville Pirates, 13-3, and sophomore Tryce Howard threw a complete game. He gave up runs with five hits and six strikeouts. Truncale and Angelle were both 2-for-3 at the plate.

Lumberton defeated Orangefield, 5-3, in the Bobcats last game of the tournament. Braxton Smith took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Ryan Gunstream went 2-for-2 at the plate with Kurt Haggard went 2-for-3 and Garret Morrell scored three runs.

Orangefield will travel to face the Vidor Pirates on Tuesday before hosting the Orangefield/Certa-Bearden Tournament this weekend.

The Bridge City Cardinals traveled to the Rockdale/Yoe Tournament. The Cardinals defeated Taylor 12-2, spanked Rockdale 16-1 and defeated Troy 5-4 and fell to Salado 4-1 and to Burnet 12-1. The Cardinals will compete at the LC-M Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
