LOCAL WRAP: Mustang Relays ready to go

WEST ORANGE — West Orange-Stark High School will play host to the Mustang Relays at Dan Hooks Stadium Friday.

The first flight of field events will start at noon with the boys discus, pole vault and long jump along with the girls high jump, shot put, and triple jump.

The second flight of field events will begin at 1:45 p.m. featuring the boys triple jump, shot put and high jump along with the girls long jump, discus and pole vault.

Teams in the boys field include the host Mustangs, Beaumont Central, Beaumont Ozen, Port Arthur Memorial, Beaumont West Brook, Crosby, LaMarque, Nederland, and Orangefield.

The girls field will consist of the host Lady Mustangs, Orangefield, Central, Ozen, Vidor, PA Memorial, LaMarque, and Nederland.

The Mustang boys are coming off a team victory at the Bulldog Relays in Nederland last week.



Diamond wrap

Both Little Cypress-Mauriceville diamond teams picked up a pair of big wins Tuesday night.

The Lady Bears turned back Beaumont West Brook 7-4 at Lady Bear Field.

Pitcher Raven Cole tossed 6 1/3 innings and struck out 16 Lady Bruins.

Hope Russell and Chelsea McLain keyed a big LC-M fifth innings by each lacing doubles.

The LC-M boys opened their campaign with a 10-3 road win at West Orange-Stark.

The Bears led 2-0 going into the seventh and erupted for eight runs to turn back the Mustangs.

In other baseball action Tuesday, Orangefield nipped Beaumont Ozen 6-5 in nine innings while in softball, the Vidor Lady Pirates, fresh off of winning the Southeast Texas Classic last weekend, went on the road and defeated the Bridge City Lady Cardinals 11-6.

The Bobcat boys got the game-winning run in the ninth when Westin Crain’s squeeze bunt brought home Braxton Smith.

Crain got the win on the hill for the Bobcats as he worked the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six. Ryan Gunstream was 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in two runs while Smith was 1-for-3 and scored twice.

LC-M golf

Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s James Walker captured his second golf tournament title of the season at the Vidor Pirate Varsity Invitational last week.  Walker fired a two-over 74 to tie Garrett James of Legacy and then won a playoff to place first in the individual medalist division.

The Bears finished sixth as a team with a score of 364.

Daniel Toohey fired a 93 for the Bears followed by teammates Josh Weaver (98), Ryan Keszeg (99) and Tyler Ridgaway (104).



CCS 5K

The Community Christian 5K Run will be held Saturday, Mar. 16 at Claiborne Park.

The 5K Run/Walk will start at 9 a.m. There will also be a 1K Kids’ Run following the 5K for kids 12 and under.

Paper registration may be turned into the Lion Pride mailbox at the main office or anyone can register online at active.com under Lion Pride 5K.

If pre-registered for the 5K by Friday, Mar. 8, a t-shirt is guaranteed and the cost is $20. The race day cost is $25. If pre-registered for the Kids 1K, the cost is $10. The cost will be $15 on the day of the race.

There will be awards for overall male and female winners in every age group.
