Mustangs throttle Huffman in bidistrict, 84-55

KOUNTZE, Texas —

West Orange-Stark pounced on Huffman early Tuesday night as the Mustangs went on to cruise to a easy 84-55 Class 3A Region III bidistrict victory over the Falcons at Kountze High School.

The Mustangs (22-10) utilized a 22-6 run to start the game, putting the Falcons (21-11) in catchup mode the rest of the night.

“We wanted to come out and be aggressive right out of the gate and we were able to do that,” said WO-S coach Jason Wilkins. “We applied some early pressure that they (Huffman) struggled with, plus, we were hitting all of our shots early.”

The Mustangs now move on to play the LaMarque Cougars in the area round Friday with a site yet to be determined.

Junior Laquarious Paige set the tone early and often in leading four Mustangs in double figures.

Paige scored 25 points in a variety of ways. He hit four three-point bombs, was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line and also had six rebounds and six assists.

“We’ve asked so much of Q (Paige) all year long and he has responded like a champ,” said Wilkins. “He sets the tone for us. If we need a big shot, he usually makes it. If we need a big pass, we know we can count on him. Same thing goes for making defensive stops.”

Senior Travon Blanchard tallied 12 points. Junior point guard Brandon Joubert contributed 11 points and five assists. Sophomore Chase Rutledge chimed in with 10 points. Junior post Tyrant Thompson barely missed achieving a double-double by scoring nine points while grabbing 10 rebounds while Tre Spencer added six points on two three-pointers.

Huffman’s Zach Dumas, who averaged 25 points a game coming in, was spectacular, scoring a game-high 33 points. However, Dumas, who was 14-of-20 from the free-throw alone, received very little help from his teammates.
