Getting another terrific mound performance by junior Chase Shugart and collecting some timely hits, the Bridge City Cardinals breezed past the Tarkington Longhorns 5-0 Thursday night in Game One of their best-of-three Class 3A playoff series.
Shugart hurled a complete-game four-hitter, striking out 13 Longhorns in the process.
Meanwhile, the District 21-3A champion Cardinals (22-3-2) picked up 11 hits off the Longhorns (13-10), the fourth-place unit out of 22-3A.
The series will be back at Pasadena tonight at 7:30 p.m.
The Cardinals picked up three hits to get a run in the top of the first.
Keaton Langston, who was 3-for-3 on the night, had a leadoff bunt single. Hunter Uzzle, who went 2-for-3, followed with a single past first base but Langston got thrown out trying to stretch it to third on the play.
A Shugart groundout moved Uzzle to second. Uzzle then darted to third on a passed ball and scored after an errant throw to third. Ashton Hunter reached on an infield single before the Longhorns got the third out.
The Longhorns got a runner to third with two outs in the bottom of the second when Hunter Johnson drew a walk and advanced all the way to third on an error but Shugart got out of it when Chase Greenland grounded out to first.
Bridge City snagged two runs on three hits in the third inning.
Trevor Gunn, got it going with a single to left then Langston got on with his second straight bunt single. Uzzle moved the runners over with a nice sacrifice bunt. Shugart brought home Gunn with a groundout to short. Hunter reached on a walk. Kyle Bergeron made it 3-0 Cardinals when he brought in Langston with a single.
The Longhorns got a man to third again in the third frame. Chase Grudzinski had a leadoff single to shallow center. He took second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Latham but the poised Shugart fanned both Larame Nash And Steven Leel.
