Lady Cards look to tame Roughnecks

BRIDGE CITY — After a teriffic 4-3 extra-inning comeback victory over the Splendora Lady Wildcats, the Bridge City Lady Cardinals turn their focus this week on the West Columbia Lady Roughnecks in the area round of the Class 3A Region III playoffs.

Bridge City’s Hannah Faulk helped lead a great Lady Cardinal comeback as she roped a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Bridge City to a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Splendora last Friday night at Goose Creek Memorial High School, giving coach Miste Henderson her 200th career victory in dramatic fashion.

The Lady Cardinals (23-8) will take on the Lady Roughnecks (23-6) Friday night at 7 p.m. back at Goose Creek Memorial High School.

The Lady Cardinals (23-8) trailed the Lady Wildcats (19-13) 2-0 after the first inning and later 3-1 before rallying to tie it and force it into extra innings.

Faulk finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Kelsey Fults was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Hannah Carpenter was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and Baili Thibodeaux was 1-for-4 and scored a run.

Kellyn Cormier got the win on the Bridge City hill, scattering five hits while striking out five over eight innings of hard work.

Columbia, District 24-3A champions, made quick work of Houston Scaborough in the bidistrict round, winning 22-1.

The Lady Roughnecks went through 24-3A with a 7-1 record. Their only loss came against Sweeny 6-3.

WC coach Shelly Murphy’s will likely send out ace Mae Lewis on the hill against the Lady Cards. Lewis (14-4), has struck out 125 batters in a little over 100 innings, allowing just 62 hits. Faith Genoway can pitch as well with a 8-2 record with 50 strikeouts in more than 50 innings of work.

The Lady Roughnecks are hitting .369 as a team.

Malnisha Burton leads the squad with a .521 batting average and has five home runs and 27 runs batted in.

 Emily Roark is hitting .529 with two home runs and 24 RBI. Celeste Loughman hits .357 with 22 RBI Madelyn Clark hits .390 and leads the team with 28 runs scored.
