Lady Cards take second by downing H-J

BRIDGE CITY — Getting a definite different kind of “grand slam” home run from senior Kelsey Fults, the Bridge City Lady Cardinals sealed the second-place playoff spot out of District 21-3A by toppling the Hardin-Jefferson Lady Hawks 6-1 at Lady Cardinal Field Friday evening.

With the Lady Cardinals (22-8, 9-3) leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Fults cranked an offering from H-J pitcher Raylie Huff for a line-drive to centerfield. H-J centerfielder Karly Smith saw the ball hit right into her glove but the shot was hit so hard by Fults that the ball rattled off the glove and over the fence as four runs scored.

Kellyn Cormier was hit by a Huff pitch, Hannah Carpenter got on with a fielder’s choice and Kasey Frederick was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Fults.

Cormier pitched a solid game for the Lady Cardinals. She went all seven innings, allowing five hits while striking out six and walking one.

Huff pitched all the way for the Lady Hawks (18-5, 8-4), scattering six hits while fanning five and walking two. H-J will represent 21-3A in the playoffs as the third-place unit.

The Lady Cardinals scratched in a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom half of the third inning.

Baili Thibodaux got it going with a deep double to center. With one out, Carpenter laced a single to left to plate Thibodaux. Frederick capped it with a RBI single to center that brought home Carpenter.

The Lady Hawks scored their run in the top of the fifth inning.

Cierra Morris reached on a one-out bunt single. Gracie Phelps followed with a sharp single to center and both runners moved up a base after a Smith sacrifice bunt. Morris eventually trotted in to score off a wild Cormier pitch. Cormier got Kaitlin McFarland to ground out, leaving Phelps stranded at third.

Cormier got out of a nice jam in the top of the third to end a H-J threat.

With one out, Mason Garcia got on after being hit by a pitch. With two outs, Phelps and Smith loaded the bases with consecutive singles. Cormier got out of it nicely by striking out McFarland with a nice outside corner pitch.

For the night, both squads left six runners on the basepaths.

The Lady Cardinals will face either Splendora or Coldspring in the bidistrict playoffs next week. Splendora and Coldspring are tied for third in the District 22-3A standings and will have to settle seeding.

The Lady Cardinals will get the winner of that game while 21-3A champion Orangefield (20-3, 11-1) will meet the loser.

H-J will face Liberty in the bidistrict round. Silsbee, the fourth-place team out of 21-3A, will face 22-3A champion Huffman.
