Mustangs turn back Bears, 62-44

Utilizing an impressive run to start the second period, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs were able to zip past the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears 62-44 in non-district hoop action at The Bear Cave Monday night.

WO-S senior standout Laquarious Paige, who led the Mustangs with 19 points, hit a desperation three-pointer from nearly halfcourt to give the Mustangs a 14-9 edge to end the first period.

The Mustangs’ press then forced the Bears into six quick turnovers to open the second quarter, propelling WO-S to 13 straight points and a 27-9 edge.

LC-M kept pace the rest of the way but the deficit remained close to the same the remainder of the night.

Paige scored eight points in the first period to get the Mustang attack going.

Trumaine Elmore put together a solid all-around effort for the Bears, recording a double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds.

LC-M didn’t help itself from the free-throw as the Bears made just 15-of-30 attempts from the charity stripe. WO-S finished 6-of-9 from the line. WO-S was whistled for 19 fouls while the Bears had 12.

The Bears were able to pull to within 31-16 at the half.

WO-S outscored the Bears 18-17 in the third period. Paige and Brandon Joubert scored five points apiece for the Mustangs. Elmore tried keeping the Bears in it by tallying 10 of his points in the quarter.

WO-S won the final quarter 13-11.

Joubert had nine points for the Mustangs. James Wiley tallied eight points and  hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds for WO-S while Corey Carcisse had seven points and Ty Thompson added six points and seven boards.

Jace Robertson scored eight points for the Bears while post Blake Fuss had six rebounds.

The Bears finished with 27 turnovers while WO-S committed 21. The Mustangs finished with a 36-35 rebounding edge.

Both teams will have a busy rest of the week as both will participate in the YMBL Tournament in Beaumont Thursday through Saturday.
