The Orange Leader
LITTLE CYPRESS —
Shea Richards made sure the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears baseball team walked off the field as Don Gibbens Tournament champions.
Walk off is exactly what Richards did.
Richards hit a three-run home run to end the tournament Saturday and give LC-M an 8-6 victory in the championship game against the Lumberton Raiders. Lumberton intentionally walked Brandon Humphrey and James Swan was also on base when Richards hit the walkoff home run to seal the deal for Coach Steve Griffith and the Bears.
LC-M finished the tournament with a 4-1 mark. The Bears reached the championship game with a 4-3 win over the Bridge City Cardinals earlier Saturday.
Lumberton defeated Jasper 3-0 in the first game Saturday. The Bears and Cardinals would have played again for the championship had Bridge City defeated LC-M.
Humphrey got the win on the mound against Lumberton after leaving the game in the fourth only to return in the seventh to notch the win. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
LC-M trailed 6-5 in the seventh when Swan led off with a double and then took third using some heads up baserunning.
Lumberton then walked Humphrey to get to Richards.
Ty Smith started the scoring in the second for the Bears with a RBI single that scored Coby Roddy. Smith reached all three times he went to the plate.
Humphrey then hit his second home run of the weekend in the third inning, a three run homer that plated both Julian Edwards and Swan.
Swan threw a great game against the Cardinals on Saturday. The senior threw four innings and gave up three runs on two hits. He walked seven and struck out six. Christian Wendt threw the final two innings for the save.
Jacob Martin finished 1-for-2 with a RBI while Richards scored twice and walked twice in the game. Roddy and Brennon Moore each scored while Roddy, Landon Procella and Dyllon Grubber each had RBI.
Bryce Sampere was 2-for-2 at the plate with a run and a RBI for the Cardinals. Chase Shugart and Hayden Guidry each had RBI for Bridge City.
Blaine McElduff threw three innings of scoreless baseball for the Cardinals while giving up four hits and four walks with one strike out.
The Bears were up 4-0 after the fifth inning before Bridge City scored three runs. The game was then called because of time limitation.
The Bears grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Martin hit a RBI double and then a RBI single from Procella.
LC-M then got two runs in the fifth when Roddy plated Richards on a RBI siingle. Grubber then brought home Roddy with a single of his own.
The Raiders defeated the Cardinals on Friday, 7-3.
Lumberton scored three runs on an error, a RBI single by Dix Cooper and a bases loaded walk in the sixth.
Guidry was 2-for-4 while Chase Shugart had a run and McElduff was 1-for-3.
Shugart threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up one hit, two earned runs and five walks with nine strike outs.
Bridge City will visit Beaumont Kelly today and will go to the Jasper Tournament Thursday through Saturday. LC-M will participate in the New Caney Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
