Mustangs face Splendora challenge

WEST ORANGE — When the West Orange-Stark Mustangs started their 2014 campaign, playoffs were certainly the ultimate goal.

Well, mission accomplished, plus 21 amazing wins to boot.

Coach Shea Landry’s Mustangs will look to take it a step further tonight when Wo-S (21-5), the third-place unit out of District 21-3A, tangles with the 22-3A runnerups Splendora Wildcats (18-5) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Barbers Hill High School in the Class 3A bidistrict playoffs.

The Mustangs will check in with solid pitching and a well-rounded lineup at the plate.

Pitchers and brothers Grant Anderson and Aidan Anderson have definitely been stalwarts on the hill for Coach Landry.

Grant sports a 7-2 record with a 1.85 earned run average. Aidan owns a 6-3 mark with a 1.04 ERA and leads the way with 86 strikeouts.

Aidan leads the team with a .354 batting average to go along with 16 runs batted in. Grant is hitting alofty .351 with a team-high 27 RBI.

Kameron Williams is hitting at .350 clip with 24 RBI. SLick-fielding shortstop Peyton Robertson is batting .329 to go along with 24 RBI.

Grant LaPoint-Teate is a superb table-setter in the leadoff spot, hitting .324 with a team-high 32 runs scored and has 12 RBI.

Eric Guillory is hitting .293 with 18 RBI. Jacob Hryhorchuk has driven in 13 clutch runs while freshman Jack Dallas is hitting .353 with eight RBI and has been solid in relief on the hill.

The Mustang lineup will more than likely see Wildcat ace Matt Jacquinot on the mound. Jacquinot (7-2) has pitched twice as many innings as any other WIldcat. He has a ERA of 0.98. He has 60 strikeouts in 57 innings of work, allowing just 30 hits. Other Splendora pitchers include Josh Reid (4-1), Josh Mendez (2-1) and Matt Adams (3-0).

Coach Joe Koesel’s Wilcats are batting .295 on the season.

Leading the way is Ty Nixon, who is batting .371 with two homers and 21 RBI.

Dave Rauch is batting .377 with 15 RBI. Aaron Smalley is batting .377 with a team-high 25 runs scored and 11 RBI. Connor Phillips (315) has 23 runs scored and 12 RBI while Jacquinot is at .323 with 15 RBI.

Both teams will be looking to bounce back from losses to end the regular season.

The Mustangs fell to Silsbee 4-1 in a battle for the second-place spot in 21-3A. The Wildcats fell to Shepherd 3-2, messing up their chances to tie Huffman for first-place in 22-3A.
