Prep hoop teams off to busy start

ORANGE — While the football playoffs got underway for three Orange County football teams this week, local basketball teams have been hitting the courts in non-district play.

In girls basketball action Tuesday, the Bridge City Lady Cardinals took down the Woodville Lady Eagles 49-21.

Alexus Henry led the Lady Cardinals with 19 points and had two steals.

Kelsey Fults produced eight points, eight rebounds and two steals. Kacey Frederick notched six points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Caylin Choate had four points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs netted a win Tuesday, downing the Vidor Lady Pirates 61-42.

Derriashia Daugherty led the Lady Mustangs with 19 points and added eight rebounds.

Eriel Jordan notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Bre’Anna Preston had 14 points. Nakaiya Platt had seven points and yanked down 12 rebounds. A’Dreama Beverly had seven points while Lauren Samuel had four.

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears fell to the Hardin-Jefferson Lady Hawks 59-53 at The Bear Cave.

After getting off to an early the lead the Lady Bear went cold and lost their defensive intensity.  The Lady Hawks took advantage of the Lady Bear let down and took a 32-24 halftime lead. 

The Lady Bears had trouble containing Kesha Broussard who finished the night with 24 points and assisted on several other baskets.  The Lady Bears were lead in scoring and rebounding by junior Tori Thompson with 13 points and double digit rebounds before fouling out.  Senior Cassidy Webster finished with 12 points, and sophomore Maddi Frey added 11 points.  Junior Josie Nimitz and sophomore Grace Chen both had 6 points and several assist.

The Orangefield Lady Bobcats fell to the Beaumont West Brook Lady Bruins 37-13 on Tuesday.

Emilee Adrio led the Lady Bobcats with four points. Morgan Worthy pulled down seven boards, and Priscilla Garza had five rebounds. Brandy Ehrlich had two steals and two assists.

On the boys side, the Bridge City Cardinals, led by post Alex Bingham, started off their campaign in fine fashion by toppling Beaumont Kelly 69-55.

Bingham was in “beast mode” scoring 26 points to go along with 16 rebounds, four blocked shots and four assists.

Byron Bacon contributed 14 points, four steals and three assists. Conner Wilbur posted 11 points and had five boards. Bret Philpott had nine points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals and Kyle Bergeron added six points, five rebounds, and five steals.
