Mustangs net second-place state track finish

AUSTIN —

The West Orange-Stark boys track team racked up a second-place team finish in Class 3A at the UIL Track & Field Championships Saturday at the University of Texas.

Sparked by two second-place finishes in the 400 and 800-meter relays, the Mustangs finished with 36 team points to nab second behind state champion Celina, which had 54.

The Mustang 400-meter relay unit of Maurice Morris, Chris James, ThoMarcus Fontenot and Colin Janice captured silver medals as they barely got nipped at the wire by Kennedale. Kennedale ran it in 41.24 seconds while the Mustangs clocked in at 41.25.

The WO-S 800-meter relay team consisting of the same foursome, finished a close second behind Paris. The Mustangs ran a 1:26.14. Paris set a new Class 3A state record with a time of 1:25.82.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Janice, Ra’Shon McDonald, Jerrious Tims and Deionte Thompson came in fifth with a time of 3:21.85.

McDonald came in ninth place in the 400 meters, running a 51.13 while teammate Will Johnson netted eighth in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing with a 40.61.

The Lady Mustang 800-meter realy quartet of Shalin Hardin, Aaliyah Teel, LaShya Cole and Shavontae Thomas took sixth place with a time of 1:41.33. Waco La Vega won with a 1:39.21.

The Bridge City Lady Cardinals were represented well at Austin as well.

Alexus Henry placed sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5-4 while teammate Kati Thornton was ninth in the pole vault with a 10-9 effort.

Several Southeast Texans came away with state medals at the State Meet.

Beaumont Ozen came away with severalof its own in Class 4A.

Tony Brown won the 110-meter hurdles with a new 4A state-record time of 13.40 and he placed second in the 100 meters in 10.53 seconds. Jakobi Jones captured a gold medal in the triple jump, winning with a mark of 48-3 1/4.

Lady Panther  Bealoved Brown streaked to a win in the 200 meters, running a 24.37. Ozen’s Nekia Jones took first in the discus with a toss of 149-9 and was second in the shot put with a 46-5 1/4 effort.
