Guidry, Pittman power BC past Sweeny in Game One

LAPORTE — The Bridge City Cardinals finally got a win versus a No. 1 state ranked team in the Class 3A playoffs.

The Cardinals, who have been knocked out of the playoffs the last two years by the No. 1 Robinson Rockets, defeated Sweeny Friday, 4-1, in Game 1 in the Class 3A Area Round playoffs.

Game 2 is scheduled for noon Saturday back at La Porte High School. Game 3 of the series, if necessary, will start 30 minutes after the completion of Game 2.

Senior Hayden Guidry started off Bridge City prom weekend off with the a bang on the mound and so did Preston Pittman while at the plate.

Guidry struck out 12 batters and only allowed three hits in the win. Guidry struck out 14 batters last week in the Cardinals 4-1 win over Shepherd in the bi-district round.

Pittman did his damage in the fourth inning after a sacrifice bunt by Guidry put runners on second and third.

Pittman was not going to be satisfied with playing small ball for just a run. He smashed the ball over the fence and the Cardinals eventually scored four runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

Sweeny held a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Sweeny did not help itself in the game with three errors.

Bridge City also could only muster up three hits in the game yet made the most of them in the fourth inning. The Cardinals continued to play improved defense by not giving up extra baserunners and had no errors in the contest.

Keaton Langston, Bryce Sampere, Chase Shugart and Pittman scored the four runs for the Cardinals.

Langston, Pittman and Sampere were all 1-for-3 at the plate.

Blaine Huff had a stolen base for the Cardinals.

Guidry threw 101 pitches in the complete game win.
