Guidry's 14 Ks powers BC past Shepherd, 4-1

JASPER — If Bridge City fans remember anything about last year's playoff run it could be the fact Hayden Guidry showed signs of what was to come in 2013.

Guidry was lights out for the Cardinals on Friday as he struck out 14 batters and was the key factor in Bridge City's 4-1 win over the Shepherd Pirates in the bi-district round of the 3A playoffs.

Guidry had several moments as a junior in 2012 that showed why ULL signed him before this year, especially coming in against Huffman and not allowing a hit and bringing the Cardinals off the brink of elimination.

Bridge City's senior ace did not allow a baserunner until there was one out in the fourth inning. Guidry allowed just three hits, did not walk a batter and upped his season strike out total to 105.

Shepherd's offense started out by the first seven batters all being strike out victims by Guidry.

While Guidry was doing his part it seemed for several innings the Cardinals offense would be held at bay with runners on the bases.

Bridge City left runners on second and third in the first inning and then left a runner on third in the second inning.

Hunter Uzzle finally got the Cardinals on the board in the top of third inning after he led the inning off being hit by a pitch.

Uzzle then stole second and took third on a throwing error. The Cardinals didn't need a hit to score the game's first run as Uzzle came home on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Bridge City.

Bryce Sampere was also hit by a pitch in the third and stole second which made the Cardinals 5-for-5 in the stolen base category.

The steal number would keep going up until the top of the seventh when Chase Shugart was caught steal and the Cardinals fell to 8-for-9 on stolen bases in the game.
