Three OC tracksters earn state; 3A running finals delayed

HUMBLE & HUNTSVILLE —

Several Orange County track athletes punched their tickets to the UIL State Track & Field Championships by placing first or second at their respective regional meets Friday and Saturday while bad weather hampered the 3A Regional Meet.

At the 3A Region III Championships at Humble High School Bridge City Lady Cardinals Alexus Henry and Kati Thornton will both head to Austin after placing second in their respective events.

Thornton placed second in the pole vault, going 10 feet, 9 inches. Henry netted silver in high jump, leaping 5-6. She barely missed going in the triple jump as she leaped 37-3 to capture third-place.

At the 4A Region III Championships at Sam Houston State University, Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bear Zoe Casteel went 12 feet in the pole vault to qualify for the State Meet for the second straight year.

The 3A Running finals were canceled due to rain and lightning. They will be made up Monday at 1 p.m. at Humble’s Turner Stadium.

At the 3A meet Orangefield’s Jennifer McManus and West Orange-Stark’s La’Shya Cole both brought home bronze medals with McManus going 10-3 in the pole vault while Cole leaped 17-2 1/2 in the long jump.

On the boys’ side, WO-S’ Deionte Thompson was fourth in the high jump, going 6-3. Bridge City’s Brent LeBleu was 13th in the 3,200 meters in 11:02.93.

Also on the girls’ side, Bridge City’s Katelyn Potter wrapped up an excellent season. She finished 13th in the 3,200 meters (12:43.27).

For the Bear boys in Huntsville, Tyler Howlett earned third-place in the shot put with a big toss of 54 feet.

For the Lady Bears, Blythe Ferguson had a nice meet, throwing a personal best 123-11 to place third in the discus and 38-9 to place fifth in the shot put.

The State Track & Field Championships will be held May 10-11 at the University of Texas.
