The Orange Leader
LITTLE CYPRESS —
In a battle to settle at least second-place in District 20-4A the Beaumont Central Jaguars took no prisoners as they posted a 42-14 victory over the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears at Battlin’ Bear Stadium Friday night.
Quarterback Michael Jacquet scored three rushing touchdowns to power the Jaguars to a win.
The Bears (4-4, 4-2), who have already clinched a playoff spot, started the game off with all of the momentum. After winning the toss and choosing to defer, the Bears Kayle Simmons recovered a fumble on the first play of the game. The offense did not waste any time either. On their first play Brandon Tolliver busted through the line and raced 69 yards to give the Bears a quick 7-0 lead.
However, Central took over after that.
The Jaguars finished with 322 total yards and pounded out 300 yards on the ground on 41 carries as they’re in the playoffs under the direction of first-year head coach Toby Foreman.
Central has a shot for a share of the District 20-4A title next week when it plays host to first-place Nederland (8-1, 6-0), which defeated last-place Lumberton 49-0.
At that point it looked as if the Bears would cruise to victory, but the energetic crowd was about to be silenced. The Jaguars’ Exavier Jones bobbled the ensuing kickoff and then returned it 99 yards almost untouched. The Jaguars did not look back from there as they rattled of another 21 unanswered points.
The Jaguars (6-3, 5-1) defense was up to the task as well limiting the Bears to just 15 yards the remainder of the half. The Jags committed 138 penalty yards on the night compared to the Bears 228 yards of total offense.
The Jags offense was led Damon Thomas who rushed for 124 yards on 11 carries including a touchdown. Jacquet produced most of the points adding three one yard quarterback keepers that all ended in the end zone.
For the Bears Tolliver continues to be their go to guy totaling 165 yards on 23 carries. Tolliver also provided both touchdowns the Bears produced. Bear quarterback Caleb Harley completed 6-of-18 passes for 54 yards. Toliver reached the 1,000-yard mark for the season and scored his 11th and 12th touchdowns of the year.
After trailing 28-7 at halftime the Bears did show a glimmer of hope, but again it would not last long. The defense manufactured their first three and out of the night just before the offense traversed the field on a nine-play, 75-yard drive.
Both teams would exchange punts to open the second half of play, before the Bears offense would get things going. A 22-yard pass from Caleb Harley to Coby Roddy would set up a three-yard touchdown run by Toliver.
Early in the fourth quarter it swung back in the Jags favor when Damon Thomas ran backwards just shy of 20 yards trying to eluded the Bear defenders before finding himself in the end zone after a 50 yard gain.
The Bears will travel to Vidor next week to take on the Pirates (4-5, 2-4) at 7:30 p.m. before they open the playoffs the following week. LC-M is in the playoffs for the first time since 1997.
