Late score lifts Cats past Bucs

ORANGEFIELD — The Orangefield Bobcats walked the tightrope Friday night as they reclaimed the lead with a two-point conversion by Dustin Verrett with 1:48 left in the to cap off a 22-21 victory against the East Chambers Buccaneers. After a very rough start the Bobcats dominated on both sides of the ball, but costly fumbles and kick returns would give the Buccaneers almost all they needed to steal the game away.

It was a team effort for the Bobcats on the offensive side of the ball as eight different backs split the load carrying the ball. However it was Carl Wiley that that was the biggest contributor totaling 137 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries.

Dustin Verrett started the scoring for the Bobcats with a one-yard touchdown and Matthew Kress would cap it off with a 37-yard run as time was winding down with 1:48 remaining.

The Bobcats defense came up with big stops all night as they managed to hold the Bucs to an incredible negative two yards in the first half and 115 yards total offense for the game. Austin Verret led the effort contributing a fumble recovery and two interceptions while Sean Langele snagged one pick as well.

Even though the Bucs were not able to pull out the victory, the game started out with a bang as Dory Roberts ran the opening kickoff back 95 yards untouched for the early lead.  Victor Lopez added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with only 14 seconds into the game.

The Bucs would gain even more momentum on the ensuing kick off as the Bobcats muffed the catch and the Bucs Charlie Edwards recovered the ball.

Things would start to turn around early in the second quarter when Verrett claimed an interception to set his offense up in enemy territory.

The Bobcats used five plays and a 22-yard run from Colby Choate to set up Verrett’s one yard tote for a touchdown. After Matthew Rainey’s kick the score was even at seven with 7:48 remaining in the first half.

The Bobcats first drive of the second half would span 68 yards on 11 plays as Carl Wiley capped off the drive with a one-yard run. Rainey added the kick for a 14-7 lead.

The Bucs would strike back immediately as Jarrod Guillory returned the kick off 81 yards to pull the Bucs back to even with 6:20 remaining in the third.

The Bobcat again turned the ball over on the following kick off to set up another touchdown for the Bucs. Brandon Johnson carried it in for a 21-14 lead with 3:16 left in the third quarter.

With time winding down Matthew Kress found a running lane and broke free carrying the ball 37 yards to find pay dirt in the last two minutes of the game. Verrett would sneak in on the two point conversion to give the Bobcats the 22-21 lead.

The Bucs would try to find some late game heroics but Verrett again would come up with a big play snatching a tipped pass out of the air to seal the deal for the Bobcats.

Next week the Bobcats will take on the Jasper Bulldogs next Friday at home at 7 p.m.
