Lamar women’s basketball coach Larry Tidwell resigns

BEAUMONT —  After becoming the winningest women’s basketball coach at Lamar University earlier this season and guiding the Lady Cardinals to postseason play for the third time in the last four years, head basketball coach Larry Tidwell resigned Thursday to accept the same position at Texas-Pan American.

Tidwell, who just completed his sixth season with the program, leaves Lamar with a career record of 128-66 (.660). The Lady Cardinals won a regular season Southland Conference title, one Southland Conference Tournament and at least 20 games four times under Tidwell.

“We want to thank coach Tidwell for the outstanding job that he has done here at Lamar,” said Lamar Athletics Director Jason Henderson. “He has raised the program both on and off of the court to a new level of excellence. We want to wish him the very best in his new endeavor and thank him again for the great job that he has done in transforming the women’s basketball program.”

Lamar finished 22-11 this year and advanced to the second round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. Tidwell guided the Lady Cardinals to a 26-8 record in 2009-10 and the school’s second NCAA Tournament appearance, earning Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Division I Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year honors.

A national search for Tidwell’s successor will begin immediately.
