Lady Bobcats sweep past Lady Cardinals

ORANGEFIELD — By sweeping Orange County rival Bridge City Tuesday night, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats inched closer to at least clinching the third-place playoff spot out of District 21-3A.

After surging late in games to capture the first two games, the Lady Bobcats rallied to down the pesky Lady Cardinals in Game Three as Orangefield snagged a 25-15, 25-20, 28-26 victory at Bobcat Gym.

The Lady Bobcats improved to 7-4 in 21-3A and close out the regular season Tuesday at home against first-place Hardin-Jefferson.

The Lady Cardinals slipped to 5-5 in district play and are currently tied with Buna for fourth-place.

The Lady Cardinals still have H-J and Silsbee to play as they battle Buna for the final playoff spot.

Priscilla Garza and Taylor Benoit paced the Lady Bobcats with 10 kills apiece. Sabryn Crain had nine kills while Morgan Worthy and Rebekah Newell added four apiece.

The Lady Bobcats really had their service game working as they finished with 12 aces.

Crain did the most damage, netting 13 service points to go along with five aces. Kaylie Evans served up 12 points and three aces. Benoit had six points and two aces while Brandy Ehrlich added five points and two aces.

Jessi Glover led the Lady Cardinals with 11 kills. Alexus Henry chimed in with 10 kills while Amanda Ashby had six and Gabby Smith four.

Baili Thibodaux had 11 points and an ace. Olivia Bass had five points while Henry contributed four points and an ace.

Game One was tight as with the Lady Bobcats leading 17-15. However, Orangefield ran off the game’s final eight points as Crain served up seven straight points, including three aces.

Orangefield led Game Two 17-15 but was able to pull away again by tallying eight of the last 13 points.

The Lady Cardinals had their chances in Game Three and had two opportunities to wrap that one up with leads of 24-23 and 26-25 but two service errors proved too costly down the stretch with the Lady Bobcats scoring the match’s final three points.
