Big-play Tigers topple BC

SILSBEE, Texas — The Bridge City Cardinals held their own against an explosive Silsbee Tigers for awhile but the Tigers had way too many big plays led by quarterback Patrick Reed and defensive back/wide receiver Chris Elam as Silsbee walked away with a 56-27 District 21-3A victory Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

Reed ran for four touchdowns and passed for another. He finished with 190 yards on 19 carries and passed for 136 yards.

Meanwhile, Elam had three interceptions, brought back one for a score and also scored on a 74-yard kickoff return as the Tigers improved to 5-1 overall, 3-0 in 21-3A play.

Cardinal quarterback Chase Shugart completed 11-of-23 passes for 210 yards  and a TD but had four picks. He also ran for 81 yards on just eight totes. BC falls to 1-5 overall, 0-2 in 21-3A play.

The Cardinals did run up 386 yards of total offense while the Tigers had 433.

After the Cardinals took the opening series 65 yards in six plays to take the early 7-0 lead, Reed took over.

The key play on the Cardinals’ first score was Shugart hooking up with receiver Keaton Langston on a 32-yard pass down the right side. Tailback Jonah Lemoine capped it with a 17-yard touchdown dart up the gut. Lemoine had 60 yards on 15 carries.

On the second play of the Tigers’ first series, Reed cut off the right side and went 66 yards for the touchdown down the right sideline as Silsbee tied it with 9:40 in the first period.

Elam picked off a Shugart pass at the Tiger 25 and returned it 40 yards to the BC 35. On the next play Reed had a 35-yard keeper for a touchdown to make it 14-7 with 7:48 in the first.

The Tigers pounced on a BC fumble at the Cardinal 33 and the Tigers were in the end zone again six plays later when Reed kept it from a yard out to make it 21-7 with 4:41 in the first.

Silsbee went up 28-7 when Reed connected with receiver Zayon Jackson on a 32-yard TD pass over the middle.

The Cardinals kept battling though. They pulled to within 28-14 when Shugart teamed up with Ryan Shugart on a beautiful 58-yard touchdown strike down the left side.

The Cardinals put together a five-play, 72-yard scoring march that was capped off by a Colt Poole 1-yard TD plunge to make it 28-20 with 7:07 left in the second period. Shugart had a nice 31-yard quarterback keeper and Lemoine had a 30-yard dart to the 1 to set up the score.

Elam then gave the Tigers a lift when he took the ensuing kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown, upping the Tiger lead to 36-20 with 6:49 in the half.

Silsbee had 241 yards at the half while BC had 240.

Shugart was 6-of-13 for 123 yards and had two picks. He also rushed for 62 yards on six carries while Lemoine had 52 yards on 10 totes.

Reed had 125 yards on 12 carries and completed 7-of-12 passes for 89 yards.

Jackson put the Tigers up 43-20 with 9:01 in the third when he replaced Reed for a play and went 30 yards around the right side for the score.

Elam made it 50-20 when he returned a Shugart interception 47 yards for a score.

Reed then got loose again, bolting 55 yards for a touchdown to make it 56-20 with 6:50 in third.

Shugart led a eight-play, 64-yard BC scoring march to make it 56-27. He completed four passes for 53 yards all of them to Malcolm Busby and Lemoine capped it with a two-yard TD plunge with 3:50 in the third. Busby finished with five catches for 61 yards.

The Cardinals will return home to Larry Ward Stadium next week when they host Hamshire-Fannett while the Tigers will have their bye week.
