Cats host H-F in pivotal tilt

ORANGEFIELD — It’s still early in the District 21-3A campaign but both the Orangefield Bobcats and Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns are seeking a win that could be critical for their postseason future.

Both teams are coming off tough losses last week.

The Bobcats (3-2, 0-1) dropped a 52-14 road decision at Silsbee while the Longhorns (2-2, 0-1) fell to West Orange-Stark 36-10 at home.

Both units will look to shore up defensively.

The Bobcats gave up 540 yards in the loss to the Tigers while the Longhorns allowed WO-S 410 yards.

Orangefield will rely heavily on 21-3A’s top running game. Orangefield is averaging 306.8 yards a game, 287.4 of it coming via the ground.

Senior running back Carmichael Wiley continues to lead 21-3A with 692 yards on 27 carries.

Bobcat quarterback Carmichael Wiley has rushed for 323 yards on 74 totes.

The Bobcats will face a H-F defense that is giving up 313.5 yards per outing which includes 207.3 on the ground and 106.2 in the air.

Then Longhorns, without question, are led by sophomore quarterback Kendrick King.

King is 21-3A’s second leading rusher with 648 yards and nine touchdowns on 93 carries. He has also completed 27-of-45 passes for 411 yards and four TDs with one pick. He ran for 172 yards on 32 carries and passed for 89 more in the loss to WO-S.

His favorite targets are Ryan Johnson, Chris Jolley and Caleb Havard, who caught three passes for 89 yards against the Mustangs.

H-F will face a Bobcat defense that is allowing 298.8 yards per outing including 195 on the ground and 103.8 in the air. Orangefield defenders like defensive lineman Mason Sonnier and linebacker Colby Choate will try to slow down King and Co.

The Bobcats defeated the Longhorns 54-28 last season in an offensive slugfest.

Orangefield rolled up 599 yards, 590 of it on the ground behind Carl Wiley’s 254-yard, 20-carry performance. Meanwhile, the Longhorns totaled 417 yards, 201 on the ground and 216 in the air.

The Bobcats will venture to Sour Lake next week to take on Hardin-Jefferson while the Longhorns will play host to Buna.
