ORANGE — Vidor running back Sage Smith is The Orange Leader’s Offensive Player of the Week and West Orange-Stark defensive back Dre Spencer is the Defensive Player of the Week after stellar performances last week.

Spencer was a key cog in the 2-1 Mustangs’ superb 31-7 victory over Beaumont Central.

Spencer was involved in 10 tackles, seven of them unassisted. He also had a tackle for a loss and also had a deflected pass.

The Mustangs limited a potent Jaguar attack to just 232 total yards and held them scoreless until the last play of the third quarter.

Spencer and the Mustangs head to Jasper (1-2) Friday.

Smith, meanwhile, continues to tear it up on the ground for the Pirates.

Smith darted through the Clear Brook defense for 191 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns in Vidor’s tight 33-29 loss to the Class 5A Wolverines.

Smith now has 627 yards and nine touchdowns through just three games.

Smith and the Pirates have their bye week this week before they take on early District 20-4A favorite Nederland on the road Sept. 27.
