HOOP WRAP: Holmes, Tigers outlast Mustangs, 79-72

WEST ORANGE — West Orange-Stark placed five players in double figures Friday night but it wasn’t quite enough as Silsbee’s Jordan Holmes fired in 36 points to lead the Tigers past the Mustangs 79-72 in District 21-3A action at Mustang Gym.

The win now puts Silsbee (18-7, 6-0) alone in first-place in the 21-3A standings while the Mustangs are now 16-9 overall and 5-1 in district, one game ahead of third-place Hardin-Jefferson.

Holmes hit a variey of shots throughout the night. He connected on nine field goals but did most of his damage from the free-throw line where he went 16-of-19.

The Tigers shot an astounding 30 more free-throws then the Mustangs. Silsbee finished 24-of-47 from the charity stripe while the Mustangs made 12-of-17.

The Mustangs trailed by as much as 58-47 late in the third period but cut the margin to 58-52 at the end of the period with a 5-0 run.

A Chase Rutledge three-pointer with 7:30 remaining trimmed the margin to 58-55 and then a three-point bomb by Tre Spencer with 6:57 left drew the Mustangs to within 59-58.

Holmes and Chris Elam, however, ripped two three-pointers for the Tigers to help put the Tigers back up 68-59 with a little less than three minutes left.

The Mustangs kept battling back, getting it down to as close as 75-70 after a Brandon Joubert three-pointer with 1:17 left.

The Tigers, sparked by Holmes’ free-throw shooting down the stretch, eventually put the game away. Holmes made 7-of-9 from the line in the final period and the Tigers attempted more free-throws in the quarter - 22 - than the Mustangs shot the entire game.

Laquarious Paige led the Mustangs with a double-double, finishing with 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Rutledge filtered in 13 points. Joubert finished with 11. Deionte Thompson and Tyrant Thompson each had 10 points and five boards to spark the Mustang effort. Travon Blanchard added seven points and six rebounds.

Elam finished with 19 points for the Tigers. Post Patrick Reed had a double-double, scoring 12 points while grabbing 12 rebounds.

The Mustangs hampered themselves by committing 23 turnovers while the Tigers had 15 of their own.

WO-S finished with a 34-30 rebounding edge.

Silsbee led 21-17 at the end of the first period as Holmes and Reed combined for 18 points. Paige had seven for the Mustangs in the period.

Both teams scored 24 points in the second quarter.

Holmes fired in 12 points in the period while Elam had eight.

Both teams will return to 21-3A action Tuesday when the Mustangs host Hamshire-Fannett and the Tigers will travel to Orangefield.
