Big second half lifts Lady Bobcats past Lady Cards, 56-42

BRIDGE CITY — Friday night was not the best shooting night for the Orangefield Lady Bobcats but the team left Bridge City Gym with a two game lead for third in District 21-3A.

Orangefield got another double-double performance from Morgan Moss in its 56-42 victory over their rivals in the Bridge City Lady Cardinals.

The Lady Bobcats are now 13-10 overall and 5-3 in the district standings while Bridge City fell to 12-14 and 3-5.

Moss was hard to stop Friday night as she poured in 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Orangefield Coach Katie Sanders.

Kacey LeBlanc scored seven of her 12 points in the second period while Paige Perales came off the bench and scored 10 big points in the second half and also had six rebounds. Morgan Worthy finished the night with nine points and five board.

The Lady Cardinals kept the game close until only scoring six points in the third period. Bridge City tried to come back in the fourth but Megan Burton’s third three of the night for Orangefield with just under four minutes left gave the Lady Bobcats a 11 point lead at 49-38.

“I would really love to see us put a whole game together,” Sanders said. “It was a tough shooting night and especially from the free throw line. That hurts because we spend a lot of time shooting and we are usually in the 70 percent range.”

Orangefield was 6-for-28 at the line on Friday.

One of the main reasons Orangefield was able to keep the Lady Cardinals from ever building a lead was its usual hard-nosed defense.

The Lady Bobcats forced 26 turnovers.

One of the main reasons Orangefield had a tough time though putting Bridge City away was the fact the Lady Cardinals forced the Lady Bobcats into turning the ball over 18 times.

Bridge City got a team-high 14 points from Bailee Bacon and also got a stellar performance from Alexus Henry who scored 13 points, eight coming in the fourth period.

Kasey Fredrick scored nine points for the Lady Cardinals and had seven rebounds while Harleigh Myers contributed eight rebounds.

The Lady Bobcats were up five after the first period with a  12-7 score yet Bridge City cut into the lead as Orangefield was up 26-25 at the break.

Bridge City had a very tough shooting third period and the Lady Bobcats took advantage and led 40-31 heading into the fourth period.

Orangefield stays on the road Tuesday with a trip to Silsbee while Bridge City has another home game Tuesday as the Buna Lady Cougars travel to face the Lady Cardinals.
