Cardinals survive again; down Bobcats, 4-2

Nobody can deny the Bridge City Cardinals are not winning in the prettiest fashion these days. Nobody can also deny the Cardinals though are winning.

Bridge City found new ways to win again on Friday in a 4-2 victory over the Orangefield Bobcats to move to 6-0 in the District 21-3A standings. Orangefield fell to 4-2 in the standings, a game behind second place Silsbee.

Bridge City scored three of its four runs in the bottom of the first and really seemed to have already found a way to knock around Orangefield starting pitcher Braxton Smith.

Smith struggled again in the second yet after that found his groove and kept the Cardinals at bay for most of the night. Smith struck out seven batters and only gave up three hits in six innings of work on 95 pitches.

His counterpart, Bridge City starer Hayden Guidry, also had a great night on the mound while striking out 10 batters. He gave up four walks and four hits.

“We definitely don't like to win pretty these days,” Bridge City Coach Chad Landry said. “The last couple of games we have a secret acronym but I can tell you it isn't pretty. We have come to realize who we are. We are not going to run rule teams but when things happen during a game we are prepared for them. We have seen a lot of situations this year and we are ready.”

Landry pointed to the fifth inning as an example when the Cardinals led off the inning with a Keaton Langston single. Langston stole second and took third on a wild pitch before two straight Cardinals outs. Langston scored the Cardinals fourth run of the night on an Orangefield error.

One thing that has become a constant for the Cardinals is the relief pitching of sophomore Chase Shugart.
