SOFTBALL WRAP: Lady Cards stifle Cats; LC-M tops Big Ned

BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City received all it could handle from Orange County rival Orangefield but the Lady Cardinals dug in and scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth as they went on to notch a 3-0 District 21-3A victory over the Lady Bobcats at Lady Cardinal Field Friday night.

The win pushes Bridge City to 7-1 in 21-3A play as they remain in second-place behind district leader Silsbee. The Lady Bobcats dropped to 5-3 but still remain in a the solid third-place position.

Kellyn Cormier got the win on the hill for the Lady Cardinals. She went the distance, scattering six hits while striking out four and walking one.

Khandi Breaux pitched well for the Lady Bobcats, allowing seven hits while fanning four while walking two.

The Lady Cardinals picked up a pair of doubles in the sixth to turn back the Lady Bobcats.

Kasey Frederick drew a leadoff walk and Fults crushed a Breaux offering for a RBI double all the way to the centerfield wall. Frederick beat the throw at home to score and Fults advanced to third. Fults was able to race in to make it 2-0 off a Anne Borg RBI groundout to second.

Baili Thibodeaux came through with a double to right centerfield and she scored off an error of a bunt by Hannah Carpenter.

Bridge City put two runners on in the bottom of the fifth but came away empty-handed.

Bailee Bacon and Faith Kaufman connected on back-to-back one-out singles that both were hard hit between shortstop and second base. Cormier got out of the situation when Kaleigh Carter hit into a fielder’s choice as Bacon was out at third and then she struck out Cormier to end the inning.

Orangefield put two runners on base in the fourth with no outs but Cormier worked out of it.

Kaylie Evans drew a leadoff walk and Haleigh Turley smacked a single to right. Cormier got Kylie Bradley to fly out. Ashton Gatreaux hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Evans out at third and then Cormier struck out Haley Fontenot to get out of the inning.

The Lady Bobcats threatened in the top of the third.

Fontenot sliced a leadoff single down the rightfield line and moved to second after a nice sacrifice bunt by Sammi Burgess. With two outs, Kelsey Ancelot reached on an infield single and swiped second after Fontenot landed on third.

Cormier got out of the inning when Breaux hit a hard flyball that Lady Cardinal shortstop Hannah Carpenter made a great play on.

Bridge City failed to score a run in the bottom of the third with two runners in scoring position.

Bacon had a one-out infield single and Kaufman followed with a hard single up the middle. Carter then hit a deep fly ball out to centerfield but the runners were able to advanced to second and third. Breaux got out of the jam by fanning Cormier.

The Lady Cardinals will play host to the Buna Lady Cougars today at 11 a.m. while the Lady Bobcats head to Silsbee to face the Lady Tigers.
