Barbers Hill downs Bears in Game One

MONT BELVIEU — The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears were unable to get things going Friday night as they fell to the Barbers Hill Eagles 14-4 in six innings in Game One of their best-of-three Class 4A Region III bidistrict playoff series at Barbers Hill High School.

The Bears pitching staff managed to hold the Eagles to just five hits. However, the Bears struggled to find the strike zone all night as the combined for a total of 11 walks. The defense also contributed to the problem by lending five errors.

James Swan got the rock to start the game and ran into trouble early when the Eagles’ Kaleb Denny hit a lead off triple over the center fielder. After three walks Swan managed to find a double play to get out of a bases loaded jam while allowing only one run.

The second inning would prove to be much more difficult. Swan would allow three more walks and four runs before his night ended early. Christian Wendt would not be able to stop the bleeding as another four runs would cross the plate before the inning ended.

The Bears offense had three hits on the night. They got on the board in the third inning as Brandon Humphrey hit a double to the right-center gap to score Shea Richards. In the fourth Richards, Dylan Gruber, and James Swan would contribute with one RBI each.

LC-M coach Steve Griffith remains optimistic about his chances.

“We have two good pitchers ready to go tomorrow,” said Griffith. “That is what you need against a good team like this.”

The Bears will host Game Two today at Don Gibbens Field at LC-M High School. Game Three, if necessary, will follow 30 minutes after Game Three.

In other 4A playoff action Friday night, Kingwood Park downed the Lumberton Raiders 5-1 to sweep that series.
