BC, LC-M, Vidor in thick of softball races

ORANGE — Two big softball battles will highlight a strong high school softball week in Orange County starting tonight.

In District 21-3A play tonight, one team will walk away all alone in first-place as the Bridge City Lady Cardinals welcome in the Silsbee Lady Tigers at Lady Cardinal Field.

Both teams will enter with a perfect 3-0 21-3A slate.

Silsbee has the district’s returning Most Valuable Player in the form of pitcher Cierra Roby, who will try to slow down the hot bats of Bridge City that includes the likes of Annalisa Borg and Kelsey Fults.

In other 21-3A action tonight, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats (2-2) will welcome in Hardin-Jefferson (1-2). After two tough back-to-back losses to Bridge City and Silsbee, the Lady Bobcats bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Hamshire-Fannett (2-1) late last week.

The West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs (0-4) will be seeking their first district win on Friday when they visit Orangefield. WO-S battled Hamshire-Fannett well last week before falling 7-5. Bridge City will welcome in Hamshire-Fannett on Friday.

In District 20-4A, the big encounter looms Friday when the first-place Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears (19-4, 5-0) entertain the second-place Vidor Lady Pirates (15-6 4-1).

Both teams can’t affords to look ahead tonight when LC-M visits Beaumont Central while Vidor welcomes in Livingston.

The Lady Bears spanked Lumberton 10-0 last Friday, getting a complete-game no-hitter from Raven Cole, who also struck out 12 in the five-inning game and she also watched her teammates pile up 10 hits.

The Lady Pirates are coming off a huge 3-0 victory over Port Neches-Groves (3-2) Friday. Vidor received superb mound performances by Gia Johns and Whitney Howerton to slow down the PN-G attack. Johns and Shanice Hagler paced the offense with RBI singles.

Vidor’s only 20-4A loss came at the hands of Nederland 16-3 in its 20-4A opener but the Lady Pirates have won four straight since.

It will be the second matchup this season between the Lady Bears and the Lady Pirates. Vidor squeezed out a 9-7 victory over LC-M in the championship game of the Southeast Texas Classic held in Beaumont last month.

PN-G is currently tied for the third-place spot with Nederland (3-2) and Livingston (3-2). Livingston and Beaumont Ozen are both tied for sixth at 1-4 while Beaumont Central is last at 0-5.
