The Orange Leader
After absorbing a fierce 1-0 loss to Silsbee on Tuesday night, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats returned home Thursday and got back on the right track as they blanked the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns 6-0 in District 21-3A play at Lady Bobcat Field.
Orangefield ace Khandi Breaux was “money’ on the mound for the Lady Bobcats (3-1 on district).
She allowed the Lady Longhorns (0-3 in district) just two hits through seven innings of work and struck out 13 to go along with a pair of walks.
The Lady Bobcats got just five hits off H-F pitcher Wendy Piggott but they took advantage of a couple errors and seven walks to manufacture some runs.
The Lady Bobcats scratched in a run in the bottom of the first.
Maleah Sauceda and Kaylie Evans drew one-out walks and both advanced on a passed ball. Sauceda eventually crossed home after a deep sacrifice fly to left by Ashton Gatreaux.
Orangefield erupted for five runs in the bottom half of the second.
Breaux led off with a sharp double to left and courtesy runner Macy Edgerly went to third on a passed ball and scored off a Haley Fontenot RBI single over first base to make it 2-0.
Fontenot increased the lead to 3-0 when she scored on a passed ball. With the bases loaded, Gatreaux made the Lady Longhorns pay again when she cranked out a two-run single to shallow centerfield.
Evans added a single for Orangefield in the fourth and Breaux had a single in the fifth to give her two hits on the day.
H-F’s biggest threat came in the top of the second.
Desiree Servant had a one-out walk. Piggott followed with a single to left and Amanda Fountain drew a walk to load the bases.
Breaux, however, got out of the jam when she got Taylor Reynolds to hit into a fielder’s choice as Servant was thrown out at home. Breaux ended the possible jam when she fanned Corina Llanes.
The Lady Bobcats will face a stern test when they take on first-place Hardin-Jefferson in Sour Lake Tuesday.
