Lady Bulldogs rally to top Lady Bears 2-1 in 13 innings

NEDERLAND — One thing for certain, when the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears and the Nederland Lady Bulldogs battle it out in District 20-4A softball, it is usually a great battle when the two perennial playoff powers meet.

That was no different Saturday night as the two talented squads hooked up in a 13-inning defensive affair.

After not a single run came across the plate for 12 innings after brilliant pitching performances by LC-M ace Hope Russell and Nederland ace Madyson Guidry, things got interesting in the 13th.

Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the inning, it was the Lady Bulldogs (10-6, 2-1) that had the final answer to claim a 2-1 home victory.

Lady Bulldog leadoff hitter Tori Cooper started it off with a bunt single and swiped second then Savana Guidry followed with a walk.

Nicole Matise promptly put down an excellent bunt and an errant throw to third allowed Cooper to race in to tie things up.

With one out, Taylor Davis drove in the winning run when Guidry darted in to score on a ground ball.

The Lady Bears (15-4, 2-1) thought they had a victory in their hands when they scratched in a run in the top half of the 13th.

Mikaela Stegall, who had two of the Lady Bears’ four hits on the night, slapped a single over first base. Danyelle Hodges put down a nice bunt and an errant throw to second put two runners on with no outs.

Haley Mills followed with a deep fly ball to right that was dropped. However, Mills was eventually caught in a rundown between first and second but Stegall and Hodges advanced to third and second.

Angel Villanueva put LC-M up when she lofted a deep sacrifice fly to right that plated Stegall.

It was definitely a great night for both pitchers.

Guidry scattered just the four hits while striking out 11 and walking three.

Russell went the whole way for the Lady Bears and she allowed just a mere six hits while fanning six and walking two.

Neither team made serious threats after the fifth inning as both pitchers were on fire and there were a slew of excellent defensive plays.

LC-M threatened in the fifth when Morgan Babineaux had a one-out single to center and Stegall reached on an error.

Guidry got out of it though when she struck out Kayla Manuel and received a great defensive catch in center by Hannah Smith that robbed Mills of a possible single and RBI.

Nederland almost scored in the bottom of the fourth.

Guidry reached on a bunt single and moved to third on a Matise bunt and an errant throw to first to put two runners on with no outs.

Russell got off unscathed as she got Kelsey Beard to fly out. She then struck out Taylor Davis and got Smith to fly out as well.
