TOURNEY WRAP: Bobcats take Zavalla tourney

ORANGE — Local hoop teams wrapped up tournament play over the weekend with some good results across the board.

The Orangefield Bobcats took the championship at the Zavalla Tournament.

The Bobcats hammered Woden 70-30 in the title tilt.

Dustin Verrett led the Bobcats in the title game, scoring 17 points while Carmichael Wiley chimed in with 16.

It was the fourth win in the tournament for the Bobcats, who also defeated Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill 64-34, Garrison 63-47, and Lovelady 93-54.

Over at the Hardin-Jefferson Tournament, the Little CYpress-Mauriceville Bears won four of six games.

The wins came over Buna 57-50; Beaumont Legacy 65-22; Chapel Hill 54-47 and South Beauregard (La.) 66-50. The Bears fell to Kountze 80-73 and to Lubbock Estacado 66-62.

Over at the Nederland Tournament, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs closed with a pair of losses, falling to Christian Life 60-57 despite Laquarious Paige’s 36 points and seven three-pointers and they also fell to HCYA 72-51.

Over at the Kim Albers Tournament in Silsbee, the Bridge City Lady Cardinals took the third-place trophy.

The Lady Cardinals defeated Vidor 58-26, downed Huffman 47-34 and toppled Evadale 47-26. They fell to Lumberton 69-38 in the semifinals and took third by defeating District 21-3A rival Hamshire-Fannett 48-34.

The LC-M Lady Bears went 3-2 in the tourney.

 LCM had opening day wins of over Silsbee 47-35 and Evadale 41-39. Juniors Josie Nimitz and Tori Thompson led the way with Nimitz scoring 14 and 19 respectfully and Thompson scoring 13 and seven respectfully while adding 13 rebounds. On Friday the Lady Bear lost two close games falling to Huffman 42-39 and Buna 42-31.

Against Huffman LC-M had balanced scoring with Cassidy Webster scoring 10 points,  Nimitz nine points, Grace Chen eight points and  Thompson seven points. Thompson added 12 rebounds and Malayzia Winbush contributed nine rebounds.

Against Buna Thompson led the way with 12 points and nine rebounds. The Lady Bears finished the tournament with a 39-34 win over Orangefield. LC-M had balanced scoring with Cassidy Webster and Tori Thompson scoring nine points each.  Winbush added eight points and Maddie Frey contributed seven points. Frey also led the way with eight rebounds.
