Cole, East Team roll in 10-2 All-Star win

PORT ARTHUR — It couldn’t have ended any better for Little Cypress-Mauriceville seniors Raven Cole, Kassie James and Kayleigh Roy as they wrapped up their last game in a Lady Bear uniform in fine fashion Thursday night.

Cole blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating her two teammates to help the East squad nab a 10-2 victory over the West in the first Southeast Texas Coaches Association All-Star Softball Game at Port Arthur Memorial High School.

“It felt pretty good, yes it did,” said Cole, who will take her talents to LSU-Eunice next season. “I had a full count on me. She threw me three balls and I just let them go by. Then I faced 3-2 and I got lucky and saw a pitch I liked.”

The West didn’t see many pitches they liked by facing Cole, who was named the East’s Player of the Game.

She threw three shutout innings without allowing a hit and fanned eight.

LC-M head coach Dena Adkins led the East squad Thursday night.

“I told the girls, ‘Other than pitching and catching, y’all decide where y’all want to play,” said Adkins. “They had a lot of fun with it. It was a very relaxed atmosphere.”

The East also received strong pitching performances from Silsbee’s Ciera Roby and Lumberton’s Taylor Harvill. Harvill also had a line-drive home run in a three-run seventh inning. The three pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts in the nine-inning affair.

Nederland’s Jensen Richard got the East on the board in the first. She slapped a single to lead off, went to third off a Roy double to right and scored on a passed ball. Lady Bulldog teammate Jenny Freeman contributed a double and drove in a run in the second inning.

Orangefield’s Haleigh Turley, Bridge City’s Annie Borg and Vidor’s Ashley Bunner all got in on the action in the East victory. Borg had a big infield single in the third frame as the East gathered up two runs in the inning.

The West’s  Player of the Game was Coldspring’s Riley Browder, who had a triple and scored on of the West’s two runs in the top of the fifth.
