Cards welcome in rested Jasper

BRIDGE CITY — One team is banged up going into its final non-district game while the other is just trying to remember what it is like to take the field when the Bridge City Cardinals welcome the Jasper Bulldogs to Larry Ward Stadium Friday night.

The Cardinals (1-3, 0-1) are coming off a tough 36-7 District 21-3A home loss against the Buna Cougars last week.

Quarterback Chase Shugart continues to nurse a shoulder injury. Jack-of-all-trades Hunter Uzzle is out with a concussion and wide receiver Malcolm Busby missed the Buna game.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (1-2) got off to a good start by defeating Liberty in their opener but have lost their last two games to Orangefield and Kirbyville.

Jasper has not played since Sept. 13 and will take the field for the first time in three weeks after their game got washed out with West Orange-Stark Sept. 20.

Shugart has completed 31-of-75 passes for 396 yards and three touchdowns and five interceptions.

Cardinal tailback Jonah Lemoine has 168 yards and two TDs on 45 carries.

Busby leads the Cardinals with seven catches for 166 yards and two TDs followed by Keaton Langston (5-93-3) and Cade Moseley (5-65-1).

The Cardinals are averaging 220 yards a game while allowing 408.8.

Buna limited the Cardinals to 141 yards last week.

Jasper is sparked by quarterback Steven Walker and backs DeAnthony Cuney and Randy Spikes along with receiver Chris Spikes.

The Cardinals will dive back into 21-3A play next week when they visit the Silsbee Tigers.
