The Orange Leader
LITTLE CYPRESS —
The Little Cypress -Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears managed to go home winners Friday night against a pesky Livingston team as they took down the Lions 28-21 toi capture their District 20-4A opener at Battlin’ Bear Stadium.
The Lions (0-3, 0-1) had to use big plays all night to keep up with the Bears (1-2, 1-0) including two goal line fumble recoveries and a well time 94-yard run by Bromar Ferrel to set up a game tying touchdown late in the fourth.
However, no one would outshine the Bears’ Dalton Doyle.
Doyle ended the night with 137 receiving yards and two touchdowns on just seven receptions. His 45-yard reception from Jake Sonneir set up a five-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Harley that put the Bears ahead late in the fourth. As if Doyle had not already done enough, he sealed the victory by intercepting Kurt Wilson’s pass with just seconds left in the game.
Jalen Griffin and Caleb Harley also had big nights for the Bears. Griffin was a work horse providing 150 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. Caleb Harley managed the offense well throwing 12 of 19 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
The Lions were lead by David Caddie as he ran for 102 yards on 12 carries, including a 21-yard touch-down run. Bromari Ferrell also had a big night rushing for 128 yards on ten carries. The bulk of Ferrells yards came on a 94-yard rush that would end just two yards shy of six points.
The Bears were the first team to get on the scoreboard thanks to Trent Manuel’s 37 yard field goal with 11:55 remaining in the second quarter.
The Lions answered right back as their offense covered 72 yards on eight plays. On third and 12 David Caddie broke free on a 30-yard draw play that resulted in a Lion first and goal from the two yard line. Xavier Hutchinson finished the drive off picking up the needed two yards on the ground. Dillon McDaniels kick put the Lions up 7-3 with 7:20 remaining in the second quarter.
The Bears went into halftime with a 10-7 thanks to 13-yard bubble pass to Dalton Doyle from Caleb Harley.
Late in the fourth the Lions tied the game at 21 after Hutchinson’s two yard run. The run was set up by Bromar’s 94-yard tote.
The Bears would use trickery to take the lead back on what would prove to be the games winning drive. On third and eight with time winding down Caleb Harley threw a lateral to Jake Sonnier. Sonneir then found Doyle open behind the defense for a 45-yard gain and a first-and-goal situation. Only two plays later Harley rolled out of the pocket and found Doyle for a five-yard touchdown reception. Manuel added the point after for a 28-21 lead with 1:34 left in the game.
The Bears will look to continue their winning ways next week when they head to The Reservation to take on Port Neches-Groves. PN-G hammered Lumberton 45-0 Friday.
