Lady Bears outlast Nederland in four games

LITTLE CYPRESS — In a highly competitive match, it was the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears that had the final answer against the Nederland Lady Bulldogs in District 20-4A action at The Bear Cave Tuesday night.

Trailing 8-1 in Game Four and trying to avoid a fifth and deciding game, the Lady Bears found their groove down the backstretch as they went on to take the match 29-27, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17 to improve to 2-0 in 20-4A play.

In Game Four, the Lady Bears pulled to within 12-8 and then went on a 10-0 tear behind the serving of Sarah Woods and the hitting of Maddie Frey and Jade Piper to go up 18-12. The Lady Bears then closed out the exciting match by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs (0-2) in district 7-5.

The Lady Bears led Game One 24-22 only to see Nederland come back to take a 25-24 lead. However, LC-M was able to pull it out in the end.

Woods had an outstanding overall night for the Lady Bears, finishing with a team-high15 kills to go along with 12 service points and four aces.

Malayzia Winbush was second with 11 kills. Piper had seven kills, nine points and two aces while Frey had eight kills and Darby Strother chimed in with five.

Kelsie Crowe had 11 service points and an ace. Josie West served up seven points and two aces. Cassidy Webster finished with six points while Dayja Arnold had four points and had a tremendous defensive effort.

The LC-M win offset a superb performance from Lady Bulldog Jaci Oliver, who collected a match-high 17 kills to go with four points.

Kelsey Beard had 12 kills for the Lady Bulldogs while Courtney Noel had 10.

Kinsey Miller had her servicde game working with 17 points and four aces. Christa Phillips had six points and three aces while Emma Forsythe had six points and two aces.

The Lady Bears will look to continue their winning ways Friday when they travel to Orange COunty rival Vidor to face the Lady Pirates.
