Fairfield ends tremendous BC run

HUNTSVILLE — A tremendous 2013-14 run came to an end for a talented group of Bridge City Lady Cardinals as they dropped a tough 70-29 decion to the Fairfield Lady Eagles Friday night in the Class 3A Region III semifinals at Sam Houston State University’s Johnson Coliseum.

The Lady Cardinals (33-6), led by second-year head coach Jennifer Willis, surprised many this year by advancing to the playoffs for the first time since the late 1990s, capturing a school-record 33 wins, earning second-place in a rugged District 21-3A race and winning three straight playoff contests.

It was tough sledding for the Lady Cardinals from the start against perennial playoff power Fairfield (27-6).

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 12-4 lead at the end of the first period and they stretched it to 36-13 at intermission.

Fairfield put the game away with a 17-5 spurt in the third to lead 53-18 going into the final period.

Senior Kelsey Fults led the Lady Cardinal attack with nine points and eight rebounds.

Alexus Henry contributed eight points. Caylin Choate had five points, three assists and two steals. Kasey Frederick contributed seven rebounds and three steals and Bailee Bacon had three points, five rebounds and two steals.

The loss marked the end of a tremendous season as seniors Caylin Choate, Kelsey Fults, Harleigh Myers and Trinity King wore the Lady Cardinal uniform proudly for the last time.

Both Fults and Henry were First Team All-District 21-3A selections while Chaote made the Second Team and “sixth girl supreme” Shayla Bratton was the Newcomer of the Year.

Fairfield will take on Class 3A state-ranked No. 1 Waco LaVega (31-0) in the regional finals today at 2 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum with the winner advancing to the Class 3A State Tournament in Austin.

LaVega rolled past District 21-3A champion Hamshire-Fannett 66-47 in the other semifinal Friday night.
