Mustangs roll past Cards in 21-3A play

WEST ORANGE — Getting prepared for their first-place District 21-3A showdown with Silsbee Friday night, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs certainly didn’t overlook Orange County rival Bridge City at Mustang Gym Tuesday night.

The Mustangs drilled 13 three-pointers on the night, including getting six from senior leader Laquarious Paige and they forced the Cardinals into 37 turnovers as WO-S rolled to a 86-30 victory.

The Mustangs (18-7, 5-0) outscored the Cardinals (11-13, 0-5) 26-6 in both the first and second periods to take a commanding 52-12 lead at intermission.

WO-S won the second half by a 34-18 count as they take their winning ways into Friday night’s big showdown against Silsbee at Lamar University’s Montagne Center. That game will likely start between 8:30 and 9 p.m.

Paige led all scorers as he pumped in 29 points while also leading the Mustangs with eight rebounds.

Corey Carcisse filtered in 15 points for the Mustangs as he connected on three three-pointers. Sean Cox scored a career-high 14 points as he also had two three-pointers.

Deionte Thompson and Dorsey Robinson aided the Mustang attack with nine points apiece.

The WO-S win offset a strong performance by Cardinal senior post Alex Bingham, who finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points while grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking six WO-S shot attempts.

Malcolm Busby added four points for the Cardinals while Byron Bacon had five rebounds.

Leading 5-4, the Mustangs closed out the first period with a 21-2 spurt and never looked back. Paige set the tone early, scoring 13 points in the period, including three three-pointers while Thompson scored seven points.

Bingham had all six Cardinal points in the first period and had 10 at the half.

Cox found the hot hand in the second period, scoring nine of his points in the quarter while Paige added seven more.

Carcisse scored 10 points for the Mustangs in the final period.

The Cardinals finished with a 31-24 rebounding edge. The Mustangs only committed eight turnovers on the night. Very few fouls were called. Bridge City finished 5-of-10 from the free-throw line while the Mustangs went 7-of-10.

The Cardinals will try to bounce back Friday when they play host to Orange County rival Orangefield.
