The Orange Leader
Bridge City baseball standouts Hunter Uzzle and Chase Shugart were recently named to the Class 3A Coaches All-State Baseball Team.
Both players were named to the All-State Third Team.
Each one played pivotal roles in the Cardinals (26-5) winning yet another District 21-3A crown and a trip to the 3A Region III quarterfinals.
Uzzle, who graduated and will attend Panola Junior College and who was the Most Valuable Player on the All-Leader Team, paced the Cardinals in batting average (.400), hits (32), runs batted in (38), runs scored (42) and on-base percentage (.595).
Shugart, a senior-to-be who was the Leader Team’s Pitcher of the Year, had several double-digit strikeout performances. He finished with a 9-1 mark on the hill, added two saves and fanned 127 batters and finished with a 1.63 earned run average.
Uzzle and Shugart were joined on the team by Silsbee seniors Jordan Gore and Brayden Griffin.
Gore, a second baseman, made the first team while Griffin, a pitcher, picked up second team honors.
Kirbyville sophomore outfielder Jackson Gore earned second-team honors in 2A and was the only local player in that classification to be chosen.
No Class 4A players were chosen. Port Arthur Memorial second baseman Ramiro Sanchez made Class 5A second team honors.
Class 1A had six local players selected, the most out of any classification. West Sabine, Colmesneil, and Evadale each had two players selected and all three teams had one player on the first-team and one on the third-team. West Sabine's Rickel Thomas and Reshod Williams earned the honors for the Tigers, along with Colmesneil's Dylan Falcon and Matt Bailey as well as Evadale's Kody Ingram and Chris Moore.
