LC-M, Vidor swimmers excel at meet

BEAUMONT — Swimmers from two local high schools got a chance to showcase their skills in front of the home crowd, so to speak, this past Saturday.

The Vidor High School and Little Cypress-Mauriceville swim teams traveled down Interstate 10 this past Saturday for a contest inside the Beaumont ISD Natatorium against several area teams from Beaumont West Brook, Hardin-Jefferson, Port Arthur Memorial, Hamshire-Fannett as well as regional teams from Nacogdoches, Pasadena, North Shore and Channelview.

Carly Bessire of Vidor placed sixth in the Girls 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:23.01, just ahead of teammate Hannah Odom who placed eighth in 2:26.07. In the boys bracket, Vidor's Spencer Schrek finished in eighth place with a time of 2:10.70, while teammate Mitch Blanchard was 18th in 3:02.47.

Savannah Sheppard of LC-M finished in seventh place in the Girls 50 Yard freestyle with a time of 29.24 seconds, while Vidor's Michelle Fontenot, swimming in her first meet of the season, finished 35th in 59.26 seconds. In the boys division, Damien Kirkland of Vidor led a pack of Pirates swimmers by finishing sixth with a time of 24.75 seconds. Other Vidor swimmers in this race were Blaine Shaw, 23rd, 29.62 seconds; Peter Thorne, 35th, 34.96 seconds; and Jaymes Withrow, 42nd, 53.22 seconds.

Vidor freshman Hunter Heidleberg finished in 11th place in the Boys 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:11.15, ahead of teammate Damian Mann, who placed 16th in 1:21.55 and Slade Roberts, also of Vidor, who finished in 17th place in 1:55.85.

LC-M swimmer Sierra Clark placed 16th in the Girls 100 yard freestyle in 1:19.31, while, in the boys bracket, Jaymes Withrow finished in 37th place with a time of 1:55.71.

The Boys 500 yard freestyle featured a quartet of Pirates swimmers. Spencer Schrek placed sixth in a time of 6:07.11, while teammate Eddie Dyess was seventh in 6:20.20. Damian Mann finished in ninth place in 6:24.10, ahead of Blaine Shaw who placed 13th with a time of 7:10.33.

Carly Bessire had the best finish of the day for a Vidor swimmer by placing third in the Girls 100 yard backstroke in 1:13.27. Hannah Odom, also of Vidor, placed 11th in 1:24.95 and Shae Phillips of Vidor placed 14th with a time of 2:01.15. In the boys division, Mitch Blanchard of Vidor placed 15th in 1:45.85 while teammate Slade Roberts finished 16th in 1:59.22.

Savannah Sheppard of LC-M placed third in the Girls 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:25.42, and Eddie Dyess of Vidor placed 10th in the boys race in a time of 1:21.60.

The Vidor girls relay team of Phillips, Odom, Bessire and Fontenot finished in eighth place in the Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 3:01.25. The team also finished in ninth place in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay in 2:41.24.

The Vidor boys relay team of Schreck, Dyess, Heidleberg and Kirkland placed seventh in the Boys 200 Yard Medley Relay in 2:00.87, while the team of Shaw, Mann, Porter and Thorne placed 13th in 3:59.15.

The boys relay team of Mann, Dyess, Schreck and Kirkland placed sixth in the boys 200 yard freestyle relay in 1:46.70, while the relay team of Shaw, Thorne, Roberts and Heidleberg placed 16th with a time of 2:14.25.

The Vidor swim team will participate in a Tri-meet contest with Nederland and Beaumont West Brook on Monday, Dec. 17.
