LITTLE CYPRESS —

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears gave Class 5A Port Arthur all it could handle in non-district action at the Bear Cave Friday night before the Titans finally prevailed 51-45.

The Titans led by as many as nine points late in the third period but the Bears (6-9) whittled it down to as close as 46-43 with 0:59 remaining until the Titans made some key free throws down the stretch along with getting the Bears to turn the ball over a couple times.

After LC-M’s Teondre Gant hit a three-pointer at the beginning of the fourth period, the Titans ran off six straight points to grab a 44-35 edge with 5:48 from a Torain Lott 10-foot jumper.

The Bears, however, never went away.

Christian Wendt buried two free throws and post Blake Fuss scored a big bucket inside to cut the gap to 46-43 with just less than a minute left.

Titan post Dorian Chatman, who had 14 points, calmly drained two free throws with 0:44 remaining to make it 48-43.

LC-M’s Taylor Peveto answered whn he sank two charity shots of his own to make trim the lead to 48-45 with 0:34 left.

Lott quickly got fouled and made two free throws on the Memorial end to make it 50-45 with 0:33 left.

The Bears, unfortunately, had back-to-back turnovers in the last 30 seconds as Memorial walked away with a victory.

Chatman led the way for the Titans with his 14 points and had three specatacular dunks in the process.

Memorial forward Joseph Williams had a workmanlike game with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Lott finished with 12 points while Ron Taylor added eight for the Titan cause.

Jace Robertson led the Bear attack, finishing with 14 points. Christian Wendt filtered in 11 points while Peveto had eight. Fuss contributed five points and a team-high eight boards.

The Bears led 8-5 midway through the first period but the Titans closed it out with a 8-2 run. Chatman had five points in the period while Williams had eight. Robertson had five points for the Bears.

Memorial outscored the Bears 13-8 in the second period to lead 26-18 at intermission.

Lott connected on two three-pointers in the period while Williams had five points.

The Bears scrapped back well in the third quarter, trimming the margin to 38-32 entering the fourth. Wendt poured in six points in the quarter while Robertson had four.

The Titans finished with a slight 23-20 rebounding edge. Both teams had 18 turnovers apiece.

The Bears finished 9-of-16 from the free-throw line while the Titans went 8-of-12.

The Bears will open up District 20-4A action next week. They will travel to Livingston on Tuesday and welcome in Port Neches-Groves on Friday.
