Lady Cardinals zip past Lady Bobcats

ORANGEFIELD — In a defensive District 21-3A showdown at Bobcat Gym Friday night, the Bridge City Lady Cardinals held the Orangefield Lady Bobcats to just seven field goals on the night as the Lady Cardinals opened ran their district mark to 7-1 by downing the Lady Bobcats 39-25.

Both teams struggled offensively throughout the night but the Lady Cardinals (27-4) clamped down to force the Lady Bobcats (7-18, 1-7) into 31 turnovers to roll to the win.

Alexus Henry led the Bridge City attack with 13 points. Bailee Bacon scored nine points by draining three three-pointers. Post Kelsey Fults contributed eight points and five rebounds while Kasey Frederick collected five rebounds.

Shelly Lummus led the struggling Lady Bobcats with five points while Maddy Ousley, Morgan Worthy and Priscilla Garza each had four points. Garza pulled down a game-high eight rebounds while Bailey Perkins captured six boards and Emilee Adrio added five.

The Lady Cardinals led 12-9 at the end of the first period as Bacon hit two three-pointers and Henry chimed in with four points. Garza had four points and four boards for Orangefield in the period.

Bridge City led 21-14 at the half by outpointing the Lady Bobcats 9-5 in the second period. Henry scored five points for the Lady Cards in the quarter while Lummus had Orangefield’s lone field goal.

Bridge City extended its lead to 29-18 at the end of the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Bobcats 8-4. Fults powered her way to four points in the quarter while Ousley scored all four of her points in the period.

Bridge City scored the first six points in the fourth quarter to go up 35-18 but the Lady Bobcats were able to get as close as 35-23 with 4:46 remaining.

Orangefield finished with a 32-21 rebounding edge.

Bridge City finished with 22 turnovers and went just 9-of-19 from the free-throw line. Orangefield finished 11-of-19 from the charity stripe.

The second-place Lady Cardinals will look to stay just one game behind the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns Tuesday when they visit third-place Buna while the Lady Bobcats will play host to Silsbee.

In other 21-3A action Friday, the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs (12-14, 2--6) bombed the Silsbee Lady Tigers (1-7 in district) 76-43 at Lady Mustang Gym.

The Lady Mustangs will host Hamshire-Fannett Tuesday.
